Meet Akeem Dennis

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Akeem Dennis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Akeem, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by constantly seeking improvement. I’m always aiming to outdo my last project and learn new things to enhance it. I don’t follow what others are doing; I march to the beat of my own drum. So, for me, keeping my creativity alive means never giving up, never settling, and always pushing for more.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Akeem Dennis a 34-year-old photographer based in Atlanta, Georgia, and I’m all about capturing those unforgettable moments. I kicked off my brand, Know Me Now Media, back in 2020, right after the pandemic shook things up. Losing my job at the railroad was tough, but it was also the push I needed to dive headfirst into my passion for photography. What drives me is the power of a photo to transport you back in time, sparking emotions and memories like nothing else. It’s not just a job; it’s my calling, and I’m in it for the long haul, no matter what.

While I cherish the creative process, I also have my sights set on collaborating with bigger brands. It’s a goal of mine to expand my horizons and dive deeper into the industry while continuing to grow Know Me Now Media. Currently, I’m proud to be working with We Are Cycle Breakers and Humble Beginnings, two fantastic projects that align with my values and vision.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First off, it’s about shedding that fear. Fear holds you back, so I’ve learned to push past it because if you don’t ask or take that leap, you’ll never know what could’ve been.

Secondly, it’s all about perpetual learning. I’m constantly honing my craft, never settling for mediocrity. Some folks are content with staying put, but not me. I’m always striving to outdo my previous self. Whether it’s mastering new techniques or collaborating with traditional film cameras, I’m all about expanding my skills and horizons. Satisfaction? It’s a rare visitor for me; I’m always hungry for more.

Then there’s knowing your ‘why.’ Understanding your purpose fuels everything. When you’re clear on why you’re doing what you’re doing, everything falls into place. It’s like having a roadmap for your journey. Back in 2015, I tried to dive in headfirst without a plan. I was itching to start, even without a camera in hand. Funny how life works, though. I ended up getting let go from that job, and it was a wake-up call. Now, I’m more focused, driven, and determined than ever before.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Currently, my biggest challenge lies in expanding my network and reaching out to larger brands. As an Aquarius Pisces man, I tend to dwell deeply on my aspirations and dreams, but this can sometimes impede my progress. I set high standards for myself and feel frustrated when I perceive that my work isn’t improving or gaining recognition. This challenge is compounded by imposter syndrome, where I doubt my own abilities and worry about being overlooked. However, I’m determined to overcome this hurdle by focusing on consistency and actively showcasing my identity and capabilities. From childhood, I’ve embraced a mindset of self-reliance and resilience, understanding that success ultimately lies in my own hands. While having a supportive team and guidance is valuable, I recognize that it’s ultimately up to me to take the initiative and forge connections with larger brands. I’m committed to facing this challenge head-on and pushing myself out of my comfort zone to achieve my goals.
