Meet Alejandra Guzman

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alejandra Guzman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alejandra below.

Hi Alejandra, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Having a difficult upbringing instills a diligent work ethic. My experiences and community have become my “why.” As an observant child living in a lower socioeconomic neighborhood, I noticed a great amount people in my community were unfulfilled, and most stayed stagnant due to their lack of resources. I have met several gifted people with immense potential, but they ultimately fall into the carbon cycle of working taxing jobs to nearly survive.

When I visit my hometown, I remember who I am doing it for. I am doing it for the street vendors who stand in the scorching sun. I do it for the students who cannot partake in extracurriculars after school because they cannot afford to miss the bus. I do it for households with two or more families because of inflation and housing shortages. I do it for my family and friends, who supported me in every way they knew how. These individuals ignite the discipline in my life. I always recognized that I wanted better for myself and mi gente.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Since a child, I had an interest in the arts and entertainment. I used to pretend I had a cooking show as I played in my play kitchen and stated that I would become an artistic painter when I was older. Although my family lived bicurious through me by convincing me that their hopes were my dreams, I found my way back to the arts. In high school, I created YouTube videos, photography, scripts, and more. When it was time for college, I realized I wanted to create stories, so I pursued film at California State University, Northridge.

I earned a B.A. in Film Production. With my hands-on experiences on sets and behind the camera, I took the risk of becoming an actor after graduating. The craft of acting was something that I regularly held curiosity about but was too intimidated by it. That was until I took my first acting class and realized its value and effects on me. I have been acting for three years and have fallen more in love as I go. Currently, I am focusing on my craft by studying and experimenting. I am confident that once the writers and actors strike lead to a decision, I will be prepared to go back to storytelling.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most impactful skills are adaptability, problem-solve, and harnessing emotions. My life was composed of many changes and interactions. These changes led me to be an adaptable teammate in rooms. Due to my adapting abilities, I was swift with my problem-solving skills, making me dependable. With the help of harnessing my emotions, I found myself getting to solutions promptly. All three of these skills play hand in hand in producing a productive professional and personal life.

It’s fair to give my schooling system some credit for allowing me to practice these skills, but still, I would have to give credit to psychological therapy for refining my skills. Once you can find a coach or therapist that works for you, you will be able to be more aware and in control of your actions, thoughts, and beliefs.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
The biggest area of growth has been understanding my worth and capability. Imposter syndrome caged me until I began to reflect on my accomplishments thus far and surround myself with like-minded individuals. Today, I understand that closed mouths do not get fed and that people will never believe in you when you barely do so yourself.
