We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexa Flores. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexa below.
Alexa, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is the condition of feeling anxious and not experiencing success internally, despite being high-performing in external, objective ways.
**As I grew into my place in this industry, I had reoccurring NIGHTMARES about being at parties and events and people not knowing who I am or asking why I was even there. The reality of it, is that I have been personally invited to major events and networking sites with people who knew who I was and with the little time I have been in this field, asking for my advice or questions. Its hard, especially as a woman, matter of fact, as a short woman (because it does make a difference for me), and being a person of color because I am constantly doubting my abilities or my expertise. Overcoming imposter syndrome is an everyday struggle, especially as I climb the ladders. But the one thing that reminds me that I am supposed to be in those rooms, is the fact that I AM in those rooms. Staying confident and professional has invited me through doors I would have never thought I could get through!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
If anyone would have told me a few years ago that I would be an influencer, working with influencers/celebrities or networking with major key players, I wouldn’t have believed them! I had so much social anxiety, wasn’t really on social media (I was very private) and was so determined of going to law school so I can be on legislation boards for the government in healthcare. But then I started working for a plastic surgeon and at that point social media was a new thing in the healthcare industry. I started helping them with that and ended up being at a practice that started with four employees and ended leaving at about 30 employees. During that time I opened up my own social media and became noticed from time to time. So the influencer thing kind of was an accident. As I left the industry to focus on influencing, I was encountered with a lot of people who would ask for my advice or on people or things that I knew about. That’s when I started becoming interested in the PR industry. I have been fortunate to work with athletes, celebrities, major influencers and meeting/ going to private events. This last year has been a roller coaster and this upcoming year I have been invited to creating/ showcasing huge events as an event composer or coordinator and I recently became involved with a PR agency. The most recent news is becoming a RADIO HOST for Power 98.3! Now that all my life plans have been 180’d, my goals have completed changed. I would like to keep growing as an influencer, but now I really want to be in the background of the places people visit most often (concerts, stadiums, events). I love putting things together and seeing them come to life! I plan on expanding my knowledge in the PR industry and growing my network there to see where I end up! In the mean time, I plan on launching a gym line, a media company and setting goals to keep reaching new heights.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
-Knowing how to adapt to people. Everyone is so different! To be successful or to be invited to group settings, you need to be able to adapt to the environment. Those group settings are where the best networking meetings happen
-CONFIDENCE is everything. Walking into a room not knowing what you’re getting into can be scary. But like I said, your life is just one decision away from completely changing! So prepping yourself to be, act and seethe out confidence is more important than even the money in your wallet!
-being prompt and on time. I have gotten opportunities that others didn’t because I was early or on time. Those who were late missed out!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking to collaborate or network with people. One time, I met someone at a random event and they were the owners of some of the best venues in phoenix! Since then, I have been involved in curating events and meetings and these venues have upped the level of zaza for these meetings/events! You never know who you’re talking to, so networking is so so important to me. Right now I am looking to get further into the PR/ Fashion/ Sports industry!
