We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexion. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexion below.
Hi Alexion, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I think that my strong work ethic comes from the family and friends I’m most closely surrounded by. My parents have always had good work ethics, and me seeing them work hard every day allowed me to do the same and adopt the same mindset. When it comes to my friends, a couple of them have a strong drive to push themselves as far as they can, and in return, it becomes an encouragement for me to do the same. Once I was able to have a strong work ethic, I was able to keep it because of how invested I am in EDM music.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a DJ and producer currently living in Nashville. I moved up to the city last year from Atlanta to pursue a degree in music business and marketing. My DJing and producing journey started when I was in 8th grade when I became in love with EDM music. At the time, I was trying to build a brand and name for myself with the help of my mentor. After 4 years, I was focusing on progressive house where I put out a few releases on some established labels. This was the start of my name taking off.
2022 was the biggest year for me. At the beginning of the year, I did a massive rebrand and changed my name to Alexion. This was also the start of me focusing on melodic house and techno rather than progressive house. I also landed my first club bookings in the same year which allowed me to grow as a DJ. Right now, i’m focused more than ever on producing. Moving to an entirely different city means having to meet new people to work with.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Persistence, open-mindedness, and the ability to take criticism were all essential in my journey to becoming an artist. You need persistence to keep that drive and work ethic going. The music industry is about who you know, and without persistence, you can’t branch out and meet new people. Being open-minded is important when making important decisions whether it’s contemplating whether you should sign with a certain label or determining if you should play a certain show. You can’t grow without criticism because nobody is perfect. You have to listen and take advice from others.
For someone starting out struggling with these abilities, consider taking one at a time. Start with the easiest one for you. Once you’ve developed that skill, move to the next one.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I would say my DJing has improved the greatest over these past 12 months. I used to go from DJing weddings and high school homecoming dances to being the opener and closer for big DJs at clubs. Playing clubs and music festivals is where I want to be at the end of the day, and having played a few established shows last year has allowed me to come closer to that goal. DJing these shows has not only helped me get real-world experience but has also helped me build better setlists.
