We recently connected with Alexis Williams, MBA and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience boils down to remembering why I started. I spend intentional time learning to love my inner child/ teenager and the dreams they had for me as an adult. As a teenager, I desired a specific lifestyle, freedom of identity, freedom to choice, freedom within my career, and many more types of freedom. So my resilience is my effort to create more layers of freedom for myself. I want to be able to look back on my life and be proud of my decisions, commitments and everything I was able to create for myself.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an entrepreneur in the beauty industry. Recently, I celebrated a few mile stones, my 10 year anniversary as a brick mortar business owner, 12 years in business for myself, and 20 years as a cosmetologist. It has been such a dope experience and I feel a sense of accomplishment that I created this life for myself. I knew very young that I wanted to work for myself, and that was such an infectious idea. Its been my driving force since I can remember. Along with my career as a Marketing Educator. I am thrilled at the opportunity to support the next generation’s wild ideas and strong sense of direction. I feel like I am creating space for Gen Z versions of myself. To marry my two passions, I’ve started publishing journals and workbooks that cover topics like marketing, entrepreneurship, and healing the inner hair narrative. It has been a fun journey to learn about the publishing process and to develop content for people who need it. Journaling is one of my favorite tools for self regulation, manifesting, and venting, so I wanted to offer that same opportunity to others.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Take special care of yourself and stay open to education.
Learn marketing to understand how to operate in it and trust me everything is marketing. Marketing is more than advertising, it encompasses the inner functions and external forces that impact the ability to make money and reach your target audience.
Creativity requires discipline as much as it requires motivation. Spend intentional time being creative, even if it isn’t fun when you start. You are preparing yourself for future opportunities.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
To me, entrepreneurship is a soul passion project mixed with a connection to abundance and community. The money comes once you are faithful to your mission and rise to that occasion. There are so many books that have shaped my mind when it comes to self development and professional development. “Transcending the Levels of Consciousness” by David R. Hawkins is one of my favorites. I really value emotional intelligence and put forth an effort to stay teachable in this regard. This books offers a really valuable perspective on each emotion and how understand it and navigate to healthier emotions. I have read many of the books in this series, and each provides a new layer of emotional growth for me. I’ve even taken to reading at least one title per year to stay mentally sharp about emotional development. What I can say is that this type of recognition has benefited my interpersonal relationship and my relationships everywhere, be it personal or professional. I feel like I have a language to understand some of the unspoken things or energies around me. Its improved my confidence in relationships, because I am able to sympathize with others because I can recognize their emotional cues and therefore needs. But most importantly, it has strengthened and nurtured how I love on myself.
