We were lucky to catch up with Alfred Milan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alfred, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that l
That’s a really good questions, because being an African American CEO of a Fintech company there are very few African Americans in the Fintech space. I have learned it is not just being in the room, but do you make a difference while you are in the room. I have worked hard to be successful but having a great team and faith is enough to get me through any difficult situation.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Alfred Milan and I am the CEO of Express Wages. We are the first African American Fintech company in our space. Express Wages is an LLC Fintech start up company based in Delaware LLC headquartered in Memphis, TN. It is a fintech startup with an emphasis on wages on demand for companies who struggle with employee turnover and financial insecurity for employees.
With growing inflation and many finding themselves living paycheck to paycheck, people are looking for higher paying jobs and non-traditional benefits. While many organizations cannot afford higher wages, they can offer creative benefits that are truly priceless.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe 3 qualities that have contributed with our success is:
- Never give up attitude (Our motto is do not make excuses make adjustments)
- Integrity doing what’s right when no one is watching)
- My Faith (Without God and I am nothing)
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Yes, fundraising for a start-up is very tricky and challenging but it builds character and tenacity. It has allowed me to saty (stay) focused and keep my eyes on leading our company to a great place and success.
