We recently connected with Alison Haraburda and have shared our conversation below.
Alison , thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
I grew up in a large family. My parents adopted a few individuals which made the family even bigger!
I wanted to play sports growing up and the only way to do it, was to help around the house and then do what I wanted to do. Sports became an outlet for me but it also brought the family together as everyone would come watch my games.
In order to play sports, which I was blessed to be able to play 3 at the college level, you have to have some kind of self-discipline. If you don’t any area of your life will suffer, whether your grades, your sleep, your court time, or your mental health.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
One Day Niche is my job focus currently. ODN is an activity-based day program for adults with disabilities, most of which have aged out of the school system, still live with their parents, can’t drive, and have nothing to do during the day.
ODN came out of me being guardian for my brother who was “one of those people”!
In the last 1 umonths, One Day Niche has grown significantly and it is very humbling to be able to serve so many individuals who were so lonely but now have a community to call “family”.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
A “can do” attitude. Things will be hard, but there is always a way they can be done.
Don’t Quit…doors might close and doors might open. When a door closes just remember that was not the way you needed to go at that time.
Patience…things take time and even though you want things done yesterday, sometimes they won’t get done for 2 weeks but once again, that is when they were supposed to get done.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes, I’m looking for people to collaborate with! What does it look like? I know where I am gifted and where I am not gifted. I am good running the activities, planning the activities, and getting people where they need to be. I’m not good at raising funds, dealing with the IRS, and filling taxes, and recruiting volunteers. I would love for more people to come alongside me in this journey so I can focus on what I’m good at. A CPA or someone good with finding volunteers.
I was told that collaboration can lead to people which leads to funds which leads to sustainability.
