Meet Alison Wisneski

We were lucky to catch up with Alison Wisneski recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Alison, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
As a woman working in beer without a traditional brewer’s background, I feel imposter syndrome nearly daily! However, I remind myself often that everyone has to start somewhere, I deserve to be in this space just as much as anyone else, and my approach to beer is different and may make the industry better because of it. I don’t brew the beer, but I sell and market the beer well because I share the story of each beer we make. I am a part of how it received its name, I helped create the packaging, and I know our brewery’s story and mission better than anyone else. The reality of craft beer is that we lose people when we keep our circles closed and tight – I want to work to change that, opening the doors for folks like me who have felt left out of the process along the way. Beer truly can be for everyone, but we have to work to make that a reality.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I work as the Director of Marketing at Lady Justice Brewing, which was co-founded by my wife and her two best friends and is now owned solely by my wife. She and I work to promote the status of women, girls, and nonbinary people in the state of Colorado through grants and other opportunities that funnel through Lady Justice, and we are so proud to say we’re growing every year! We hope more people realize and recognize two things: that craft beer is for everyone, and that craft beer can make a lasting impact on its community by creating a social enterprise model that gives back.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1 – Self-advocacy: I work hard to remind myself that I deserve to be here every single day, no matter what. I show up in spaces that don’t have people who look like me or my friends in the industry and I make my presence known.

2 – Fearlessness: I don’t ever feel like something I say is wrong or stupid. I may say something that is incorrect, but that means I’m learning along the way. I can’t continue to grow, change, and better my community if I don’t jump in feet first!

3 – Thoughtfulness: People listen to what Lady Justice Brewing has to say in the beer world, and I don’t take that for granted. I make sure to repeat our most important talking points (we ourselves are not a nonprofit, at the end of the day we just try to brew beer and make the world a little better, and we hope to support organizations already doing great work in the community) so people understand exactly who we are.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I am so grateful for our leadership team, who have been a critical structure for Lady Justice’s success. Any time I feel stuck (a difficult comment on social media, a threatening email, a taproom situation, etc.), I know I can bring it to our trusted leadership team to receive honest feedback that keeps our mission at the forefront. It really matters and means so much to have a dependable team who is all focused on the same goal.
