We were lucky to catch up with Allegra Fox recently and have shared our conversation below.
Allegra, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Everything happens for a reason I believe. It’s scary, I’ve been in rooms that I didnt feel like I was suppose to be there and its easy to get in your head about it all. Then I remember , I am in the room , Ive done something to get here and I belong here like everyone else. Thats how I have worked though that in the past.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hey There! My name is Allegra Jade Fox and I am the singer and one of the songwriters for The Foxtones. We are based in Austin but I am from San Antonio.
The Foxtones have been in my life for over 8 years and the project as a whole has been nothing short of fun, fast and major ” Theatre kids” vibes. The projected started when Tyler ( co-founder ) and I wanted to do more with music but still keep some elements of theatreness to it . We are actually played with the Jiggawatts and got a taste of gig life and wondered what would happen if we wrote song and well know , did shows. It was always this fun thing we would do but as time went on it became bigger than we expected and it incredible to see where it started and where we are ! We dropped our EP FUNK. SOUL. THEATRE on 11/11/23 and we recently played at Antones opening for Jackie Venson ! You can find us on IG , Facebook , etc @the_foxtonesatx . We will be annoucing shows very soon!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Hmmm Good one 1. Taking feedback: Its easier said than done but I learned you have to take the note and feedback with open arms. Think on it if you have questions and compromise . That has helped so much in the songwriting field. Having a second or third pair of ears listening to your stuff helps. They might hear something that you dont. But be open to collab,
2. RECORD EVERYTHING . you never know what little jingle you are humming to yourself that could be a bridge to something. Or lyrics, I save everything on voice memos or my little journal I keep on me. (Is that cliche ? I dont know ), I know it helps and its fun to dig up on lyrics and finally put them to something.
3. Have fun. Seriously. Sometimes we lose the plot. Remember why you are doing what you are doing . I love making music and its something Ive done since I was 9. I get overwhelmed and I have to remind myself to chill, it will come. Sometimes you gotta jam and let it cook. Its ok !
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
There was constant music growing up and still is. Mom, it was hip hop and rnb and pop , anything on the radio and well known. My dad? Jazz, Dave Koz , Kenny G . I go home now and he will be outside blasting his tunes still lol . I would sing in the car with them all the time and make up lyrics to the jazz songs Id hear. Lastly they put me in music and encouraged it and still do . I love them for that 🙂
