Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Allen Benatar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Allen, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
By taking risks! It’s important to trust yourself and to be comfortable with “failure”.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My life has revolved around Music since I was a little kid. I was always obsessed with the Drums and once I got my first kit (when I was about 13) it all took off from there. I’ve played in tons of bands and toured the world but it didn’t happen overnight. It took a ton of risk, failure and overcoming those failures which made me even more determined to succeed. Playing shitty shows, working through different situations with different band members and hiring/firing people. Breaking down on the side of the road in 10 degree weather, driving hundreds of miles to show up and the show be cancelled.. All the fun stuff! I’ll never forget the fucked up situations I’ve been in and I appreciate every single one of them! They made me stronger and really appreciate the process of taking 2 steps back to take 3 forward.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Find something that makes you happy, figure out a way to make a life out of it and stay DETERMINED. Never quit. Take failure as success and know that timing is everything. Your time will come. You can only learn from first hand experience. People can only give you so much advice but at the end of the day you really have to live your own life and create experiences on your own. Learn from them, and go on to the next. Use the positive situations as fuel. Never look back or have regrets.
3 areas of knowledge that were most impactful for me:
Knowing what I wanted to do with my life, taking the steps to get there without being afraid of failure, learning from failed attempts. – The more you try, the more experience you will have. Learn from your mistakes and turn them into positive experiences that help you succeed. It sounds complicated but it’s really not. Once you know what you want, don’t take no for an answer and do whatever you can to move forward in the direction that will make you happy in life.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My parents and friends have definitely helped me throughout the years. When I have any challenges I make sure I talk about them. An outside perspective is really helpful for me. I’d recommend talking to someone you trust and if you talk to someone that isn’t that close to you, just take what they say with a grain of salt. Some people actually want to see you fail. It’s hard to accept but you’ll see right through the bullshit as you experience more success. Reading (like you’re doing right now) also helps. I’ve seen some videos that have been inspirational. Sometimes it only takes one sentence of advice to really boost your self esteem and help you get back on your feet. Learn from other peoples experiences and don’t be scared to attempt doing whatever they failed at. One persons failure is another persons success. It sounds so generic and cheesy but it’s definitely true.
