We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Altheda Bastien. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Altheda below.
Hi Altheda, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic has a lot to do with the kind of upbringing and parents I had, especially my father. He worked tirelessly and was an entrepreneur for his entire life. He came to this country as a young immigrant, educated himself at a NYC based school of business and then ventured out to create and build his own business, along the way creating wealth and opportunities for himself and his family. As a young girl I would go to his place of business and assist him with things that he needed done around the office. He definitely was an inspiration, and I am happy that decided to take the leap of faith and start my own business.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
By day I work in sales and by night I create homemade personal care products with all natural ingredients such as body butters, body scrubs, lip, beard and body oils. I enjoy networking, art galleries, brunches, paint and sips, and spending time with my daughter Nailah. I am so happy to be able to show her the ropes and have her see how hard I work to make sure that the brand is represented in a professional manner, and ensure that the products are not only high quality, but affordable.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three skills that helped me most are having a die-hard work ethic, being professional, and aware of customer needs, and being able to effectively market my brand through social media and in person networking.
Perserverance-Never give up! You will have your good and bad days. Stay focused and give yourself time to evolve.
Be diligent to your craft; work on what you love daily even if for a few minutes-I’m on my lunch hour (which is winding down, however I know important this article is and it is time sensitive)
Stay focused-if you need to go to the local coffee shop, turn off the trash tv, or put your phone on DND for a couple of hours. Tune out the distractions and watch the results unfold.
Lastly, don’t worry about having everything all at once. Nothing happens overnight, everything takes time. Invest in a planner, make a checklist, and write down long- and short-term goals. As you accomplish each one, cross them off and give yourself a pat on the back. You’ve got this!!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes! Ideally, I’d like to and have posted on the business’ social media page that I am looking to collaborate with local business owners to host a DIY skincare event where I can show anyone who chooses to attend how to make products. Light refreshments will be offered, and guests will keep whatever they make. My ideal business owner to partner with is someone who has a spa, winery, or beauty bar.
