Meet Aman Singh

We recently connected with Aman Singh and have shared our conversation below.

Aman, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I believe my creativity depends on a few factors like the number of films I watch and study the creativity sides & other patterns of it more like art, lighting, framing etc. Moving on, Real-life stories of people around me inspire me and keep my creativity alive 10 times more. I make sure that I hear the complete experience and take the keynotes. Lastly being on set is the major learning where my brain is absolutely active to mix up with people from different fields and departments and notice how they bring creativity to life in their departments.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a freelance cinematographer based in India and the USA. Cinematography is an extraordinary skill to make a character look beautiful on screen. Today in this world of technology everyone has a phone or a camera through which they can take great pictures and shoot videos. But what makes you different is your way of telling a story on screen. If I talk about myself I believe in reality then the imaginary world. I like to be practical. But the film is kind of an addiction once you get it you love to keep working on it. I started giving more time to improve my skills on camera. I learned as much as I could from my instructors doing some personal consultation as well. All that hard work and learning from mistakes made me close to perfect. Recently I shot a Rajasthani Music video for Zee Music and a couple of commercials. On the side, I have my own company “Adivinayak Films” based in Indore, MP, India. Currently, I’m assisting Ravi Varman (ISC) with his major films like Japan and a few more commercials.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
To begin with, I believe it is very important for anyone who is joining the Media Industry, especially Filmmaking to have an extreme amount of Patience. Because being more patient will bring more creativity to your work. There will be instances when one loses patience and temper and that ruins the complete sync of the project but the one who handles it all patiently wins it over.

Secondly, having the desired knowledge of Camera Movement and framing is equally important to connect to the audience. The one with the right knowledge will always find the most decent, correct, and creative ways to tell the most complex of stories too. This is highly regarded in our community/industry.

Lastly, anything shot in the dark doesn’t make any sense, so lightly is really important, and the one who knows how to shape the lights in a way that it looks natural and beautiful as sometimes one gets challenges where he might have to bring bright sun on a dark night.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
The biggest challenge that I’m facing is the different working cultures in India and abroad. As I have worked in the US for approximately 5 years, now that I work in India I see a lot of differences. For example, to find work one has to struggle with finding contacts in the industry and assisting many people who might not be good enough but still to fetch good opportunities one has to do it. I hope this culture changes in the future and the one with good abilities and skills gets the opportunities that he/she deserves.
