We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amanda Quinton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amanda, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
If you’re a person of integrity and believe deep down inside that everything truly happens for a reason, all you’ve ever done has led you to this moment in a legitimate capacity and it’s meant to be. Of course, we all go through seasons of doubt, but you have to scale back to the 30,000 foot view in those moments and realize you’ve been growing all along. Growth is uncomfortable (they call them ‘growing pains’ for a reason), but I like to think that if you’re growing, you can keep going.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
In 2018, I founded an artist development and digital marketing company, Quinton Digital. We believe there is no “one size fits all” approach to marketing in the music industry. Social media management should be unique to each artist, just as each artist should have their own unique sound, look, voice, and message. We strive to stay ahead of the game in an ever-changing digital world, and we maintain a small roster of clients in order to keep our passion and dedication centric to each project.
Just as artists rely on word-of-mouth, personal relationships, networks, and fans to grow their audience, our business is only as strong as our clients and colleagues, Quinton Digital has never been marketed to the masses; all clients have been secured from personal referrals by current and former clients. This approach to business development has set us aside from our competitors, and is a true reflection of the character at the core of our company.
Quinton Digital’s current roster (as of June 2024) includes Zac Brown Band, Tim McGraw, Morgan Wade, Ben Rector, Muscadine Bloodline, Marty Stuart, Mickey Guyton, Charles Esten, and more.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’m inquisitive by nature, and therefore have a very problem-solving mentality. Whether or not I was trained to do something, if it felt like something I needed to figure out, I would. My biggest pet peeve as a boss is when people ask “google-able questions.” We live in a world where you can learn just about anything online, so try to do everything you can on your own before asking for advice from your superiors and be intentional with your questions.
Pay attention to the details because it shows how much you care, and it’s how you’re going to earn trust from your co-workers and your clients. Don’t work too fast and make sure you have enough time to properly absorb all the details of the conversation/email/task at hand so you can act with confidence.
Lastly, know your boundaries and know how to protect yourself and your balance. Everyone needs a personal life in order to be truly fulfilled; your work won’t fill your cup all the way up. I’ve definitely learned this the hard way over the years, but the colleagues and clients who respect and value your on- and off-time are the ones worth keeping in the long run.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I think there’s a healthy balance of both. Your strengths are what give you value, but having an understanding and appreciation for the strengths you don’t have will make you a better collaborator. Learn about your areas of weakness, and get to know people with strengths in your areas of weakness. Some of my healthiest employer-employee relationships have been with employees who had opposite strengths, because we were able to fill in each others gaps and see the value in being stronger together.
