Meet Amy Gorin

We were lucky to catch up with Amy Gorin recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Amy, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
Before I became a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN), I was a magazine editor in New York City. I decided which health and nutrition content we featured in magazines including Health, Prevention, and Parents. I also contacted health professionals, including dietitians and physicians, to interview for the articles.

Once I became an RDN, I realized that I wasn’t so interested in working one-on-one with clients because I could make so much more of an impact working with the media. So I started creating plant-based recipes and sharing them with my audience. I learned how to take professional food photos, and I started my food blog. I also began contributing to the media, including outlets like U.S. News and EatingWell, about plant-based nutrition. And I began working with food companies to help them communicate about nutrition.

From there, I began to teach other health professionals how to get featured in the media and work with brands. This is when I launched Master the Media.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I launched Master the Media in 2016, after I saw firsthand how difficult it was to earn a solid income as a registered dietitian. I combined my health professional credentials with my previous career in media–and began working with brands as a spokesperson. After I earned $262,000 in brand partnerships in 2017, I began to teach other health professionals how to create the same money freedom.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’d say passion, transparency, and going the extra mile have been the most impactful in my journey.

For passion, I’m a strong believer in doing what you love. It’s almost impossible not to succeed when you’re passionate not only about the work you’re doing but about helping the people you’re meant to serve.

For transparency, I made the decision many years ago to not hold anything back with my Master the Media students and audience. I share my income, my trade secrets, and my process for succeeding in entrepreneurship. I share the unwritten rules of how to do business and share every aspect of my process–teaching healthcare professionals how to market themselves because they are the product.

For going the extra mile, I see great value in serving my community to the utmost of my ability. I’m continuously networking with media and brands so I can bring incredible opportunities to my students. And I’m always thinking about what else I can offer my community so that they can reach their media and brand partnership goals even more expediently.

I also make it a priority to openly reflect in an honest way. I’m not afraid to admit my past mistakes, share those with my community, and leverage them to create more success in the future.

If you want to develop any of these qualities, look for someone in your community, on social media, or on another platform like a podcast, and follow their journey. No doubt you’ll gain helpful advice that will help propel your journey forward.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes, absolutely. There are so many ways to collaborate. For one, I’m going to launching a Master the Media podcast soon and will be looking for health professionals and entrepreneurs with amazing stories to share. I also love to help guide other health professionals who have a passion and are looking to grow that passion. I’ve created a Facebook community for these experts with influence, and the invitation to join us is always open. You can do so here: https://www.facebook.com/mediamasterywithamy
