Meet Amy Parker-Tunnell

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amy Parker-Tunnell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amy below.

Hi Amy, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
As a person who has always had an empathetic heart, I was guided into my profession to lead a team to help provide genuine care for others as it is very fulfilling to bring smiles and hope into other lives.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I started my home care business at the age of 55 and sure which I would have done it earlier. My passion is to help people stay at home with compassionate care so they are not forced into alternative housing away from their families and pets. I have always been one who poured my heart into others by way of listening, lending a hand, or just providing companionship when needed. Our company is based on honesty, ethics, and trustworthy assistance. I built it on the knowledge of experiencing home care in my own home. I know what it feels like to need others to help and understand what a company needs to be for those providing the care. Accountability, most often forgotten about, is number one from the office to the ones providing our services.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Patience. This personality trait is the most needed in the early years of business. There is a lot of work that you will have to do personally to set the grounds to hire someone to help. Many people have interest in starting a home care company as they feel the need is there and it will be lucrative. The need is definitely there, but it is way more than having the right paperwork or licensing. To become a successful home care agency, you must build trust in the community. And if you are going into the business for high monetary compensation, then you may not be going in the right direction. Many large home care companies get hooked on the money side and lose sight of what the business is truly about. Caring for others should always be at the forefront of anyone involved. Don’t get sidetracked as you grow because quality is always better than quantity.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
My biggest challenge right now is hiring enough caregivers to keep up with the demand of people needing help. I receive new referrals daily but not new applicants.
