We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andie K. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andie below.
Hi Andie, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I don’t know if I actually did. I still feel that way from time to time, especially with the vast amount of talent that I see around me. I get those whispering doubts and the feelings of inadequacy. I honestly think it’s more about being able to manage it, rather than fully overcoming imposter syndrome. At least for me it is.
The best way I’ve found to combat it, is to remember what my strengths are and not let self-doubt cripple me from doing what I love.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the lead vocalist and half the songwriting team for the rock band, The Key of F. My bandmate, Marie Pettit is the other half of the songwriting team. Marie is also a multi-instrumentalist and a very talented singer in her own right. Marie and I have a tendency not to take ourselves very seriously, but we take the music seriously.
We often joke that we are opposite sides of the same coin, and there’s a lot of truth in that. Marie exudes warmth and kindness. She is outgoing, bubbly and is one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met. Everyone loves Marie, and it’s kind of hard not to. I am much more introverted. I’ve got this ‘resting murder face’ thing going on. We didn’t want our music to be too happy-go-lucky or too dark and I think we found a good balance. Music is such a universal language. It’s something that heals, it’s a friend that knows what you are going through, and gives you strength when you need it. We both want to make that difference in other people’s lives with our music.
We have a brand new song out called “Need You Now”. It’s an internal monologue about a girl patiently waiting for a guy to make the first move and finally taking matters into her own hands. Marie and I had a devil of a time deciding on the song title, which is unusual for us. We just couldn’t land on something due to how many times we changed around the song. At one point I was ready to pull a Fall Out Boy and call it “The Song Marie and Andie Couldn’t Agree On What to Call It”. There were lots of other colorful song titles that myself and our producers were calling it. In the end “Need You Now” won out.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first is to believe in yourself. I’m not saying become narcissistic, but have a healthy amount of self confidence. You’ve gotta be able to tell the difference between constructive feedback and someone who just is being hateful. Don’t listen to hateful people, they just want to make themselves feel better by putting you down.
The second ( and these are not in any kind of order of importance ) is to keep learning/training. Whatever your dream is? It’s gonna take work. Keep growing, keep practicing and learning. Find people you trust and listen to their constructive feedback.
Thirdly, have a moral compass. You end up meeting a lot of people who don’t possess one. If it doesn’t feel or seem right, don’t do it. At the end of the day, you have to be okay with who you see looking back in the mirror at you.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Hmmm…That’s not an easy one. I would definitely want to spend time making as much music as possible. Then have the chance to do some traveling and performing gigs across the US and abroad. It would be so nice to get to meet fans across the globe and learn more about them and their hometowns. I would want to spend time in each area to get the opportunity to experience the country and its culture. After that, I would return home and spend whatever remaining time I had left with loved ones, letting them know just how much they are loved and appreciated…and maybe take one last doom buggy ride through the Haunted Mansion at Walt Disney World. Cause why not. 😉
