We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrea Trimble a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Andrea, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I don’t believe in imposter syndrome. I think believe that we are all given a talent and how you utilize it sets you apart from everyone else. You have think, there are other people who have come before you to pave the way. If all of those people thought to themselves “I can’t do this because someone else is already doing it” the world would never evolve. Yes, there are plenty of bakers, but the baker world doesn’t have a me and I continuously tell myself that.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Andrea’s Sweet Side is a Bakery that specializes in mini custom cupcakes, custom cakesicles, over-sized cookies. Currently we are working on new things such a offering party favors (balloons, candles, cake toppers, ect.) Also we are putting packages together for dessert tables. We are very excited for this new rollout to bring more creativity and events to life while still showcasing our desserts.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say in order customer service, taste, presentation. So breaking that down, customer service is the root of your business/brand. Understanding how to respond, responding in a timely manner, knowing your product and being on time, proficient and professional with your service. Taste, Taste, Taste! If doesn’t taste good, don’t serve it, if the flavors don’t go well together don’t put it on your menu. When I first started I would let my family and friends try it first to make sure the taste was good. If I received feedback that something wasn’t good I made adjustments and if those adjustments didn’t work, I would make the decision to scratch it until it was prefect. Practice makes perfect but what a lot of people don’t understand is making anything while under stress or frustration will show in your show work. Don’t force it just simply come back to the idea at a later time and use that product as a new roll out or marketing tool for returning or new customers. Offer discounts on that product to get people talking and wanting to try it. Lastly when you have your taste down pack, go for presentation, it won’t be prefect at first but start by making it look pretty, once you have pretty then you move on to beautiful and once you have mastered beautiful then start thinking outside of the box with creativity. Eventually you will wow your audience every time. My biggest advice is practice patience.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate with more brands, small and large business owners, event planners in sports and marketing executives. All year long there are events for Netflix, Tiktok, Wilson, movie premiers and conventions such as Africon, Sceneinblack, CultureCon. I would love to be able to provide cupcakes that fit the theme of these different events.
