We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrew and Becky Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew and Becky, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
As difficult as it may be, we just go with the flow. We remind ourselves that creativity isn’t a straight line. It ebbs & flows like our emotional state. We try to keep on creating no matter what. We remind ourselves that true creativity will show itself when it’s ready. Sometimes it’s easy for us to get caught in a loop of “We have to be create quality work all the time”—especially in today’s fast-paced, ever-changing world of social media.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We’ve known each other for almost thirty years and have been happily married for almost twenty. We LOVE exploring new places together and camping in our VW Westfalia camper van. We enjoy showing that the outdoors, traveling and being creative is for everyone. The main motivation behind our photography and social media content is to inspire others to leave their comfort zone and try new things. Our most favorite thing is when we receive a message from someone in our community telling us we’ve inspired them to venture into something new.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Learning to pivot and going with the flow 2. Knowing when to trust your gut
3. Understanding the business side of things
Learn as much as you can about your field, and adapt to any changes that come along the way. You can never gain too much knowledge.
Also, understanding how finance works for you will help your business sense.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
We have to do a full stop. It’s been a difficult lesson for both of us, and we’re still working on it. Learning what our boundaries are has helped us put tasks in their proper place.
99% of the time, nothing is so important that is should destroy your mental peace. Unfortunately, that’s something that may take time to figure out. Every day is a new opportunity to find where that boundary is and respect it. It won’t be perfect every time, but with time and practice it’ll help the overwhelming feeling feel not so intense.
