We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andriana Garbiso. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andriana below.
Hi Andriana, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
As a self described JACK OF ALL TRADES… I admit to having upwards of 35 jobs in my life yet only been fired from babysitting. I have tried many things I thought I would enjoy, only to discover that, even though I was good at many things, they did not fulfill me. I recognized myself working harder for people who treated their employees well. I talked myslef into working off the clock early on because I didn’t know my rights as a worker. It took many years to come full circle to realizing, acting and film work truly was my calling. I simply didn’t have the knowledge or support to achieve it as a teenager. My purpose is tell diverse and underdog stories through acting, writing and directing for TV and Film.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Professionally, and as Conflicted Films, my ambition is to Champion underdog stories and normalize diversity. My father and his family are Indigenous and Spanish. My mother’s family is Mexican and Spanish, yet I was raised without being taught Spanish or Dine’ in the home. I am thankful for the California requirement to teach a foreign language in High School and College. My maternal grandmother, being from Cueramaro Guanajuato Mexico, was the prevalent influence in my upbringing. Though I spend near equal time with my dad’s family, I only ever heard my aunts proudly and snobbishly say, “We are not Mexican, we are Spanish” Separate from that, there was a lot of love. There were conversations about the indigenous roots of our family in Colorado, and even a family vacation once in the early 90’s. In my opinion, the ancestral goal of assimilation was heavily achieved.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Listen, take, action and give back. I always say, I needed to wait to creak into the film and TV industry. I needed to gain professionalism, thick skin and learn the business. A strong work ethic of showing up early, consistently and going the extra mile will earn you a mentor. There absoloutly is an element of, prove yourself.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
One of the challenges I face in Hollywood is, when they want to cast a Latina, they are casting based on decades of stereotypes. This is why I am so motivated to show the diversity of Hispanic and Latino.
