We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angela Asatrian. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angela below.
Angela, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
It all comes from choosing to be optimistic. I wake up and I tell myself, “let’s do this! Let’s go! We got this!” and then I put on some upbeat music and start my morning off dancing. Our thoughts have a big impact on how we feel, so I’m mindful of what I think and say to set a positive tone for the day. Gratitude is another key to my optimism; taking moments to appreciate the basics like being alive, having a job, a home, food, and people who care about me. Being thankful has this incredible power that makes it tough not to feel optimistic.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I write, produce, and direct. I’ve finished a couple of feature-length documentaries; one about medical errors in the U.S. and another covering the 2020 Artsakh War. Right now, I’m diving into my first narrative feature, and it’s a whole new kind of challenge. I truly believe in the power of storytelling. It lets you connect with people all over the world and share messages that can educate, inspire, bring hope, laughter – whatever you want. It’s an amazing feeling knowing that your work could impact someone’s life, and I’m all about making that impact a positive one. My goal is to use my film skills to inspire and enlighten people.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’d say discipline is a top quality to have – the commitment to working harder than everyone else consistently, day in and day out. It’s the backbone that gets the job done, especially when facing lengthy projects. Pairing that with optimism is crucial; maintaining faith and perseverance when things get tough, doors close, or progress seems slow is key. The ability to stay focused and keep moving forward despite obstacles is what sets achievers apart.
Passion is the secret ingredient. Being genuinely enthusiastic about your pursuits makes it easier to sustain discipline and optimism.
To achieve my goals, I start by writing them down and brainstorming the steps I need to take. Then, I set deadlines for each task. I organize everything in a visible place to serve as a daily reminder. It helps me stay on track and focused. I would also suggest to be kind to yourself in the process. Remember, you’re learning and growing, and it’s okay not to be perfect. Embrace mistakes as opportunities to improve and sharpen your skills.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m feeling overwhelmed, a couple of things that work wonders for me are listening to calming music, like Nina Simone, Diana Krall, Adele, and Norah Jones – I’ve even got a special playlist on Spotify for those moments. Creating your own calming playlist, with whatever music resonates with you, can be a game-changer. Another go-to is a hot shower or bath; it really helps relax my muscles. But one of the most powerful things is taking control of your thoughts. Instead of getting weighed down, try turning them into positive and helpful ones. Remind yourself that it’s okay to be learning and growing, acknowledge that perfection isn’t the goal, and give yourself permission to take a break and come back to things. Remember, overwhelming feelings are temporary, and you’ve successfully tackled challenges before. You’ve got this!
