Meet Angie Tovar

We were lucky to catch up with Angie Tovar recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Angie, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Well it’s not very common that new beauty business owners start in their careers older in age. It took some time for me to realize that it didn’t matter that I was in my mid 40’s. At first I felt being older was going to be an issue. But I quickly learned that I come with my own experience and skills. Many of my clients are younger and my age has never been an issue so me worrying about it really didn’t matter. I’ve learned to build a relationship with all clients and they in turn reward me with loyalty.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a licensed Esthetician that specializes in the art of Eyelash extensions. Not only am I owner to my own suite, I also own studios that I rent out to other women owned businesses. We are currently 5 beauty suites but will be expanding to 8 in the fall.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Forming personal relationships with each of my client. Having them see me as a person allowed for them to be comfortable coming to me for their service. That with good communication skills have allowed for many clients being with me for years. I worked hard to find my ideal clientele and that in turn has helped me to continue being successful and booked.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Learning how to run a successful business is hard, on top of being a landlord can add stress to anyone’s life. I try to be mindful of those that work out of my suites. To welcome their clients the same way I welcome my own. To have an environment where everyone feels comfortable. It is the little things… good toilet paper, nice hand soap, feminine products, mints, a nice smelling shop, things that many might not notice but really do make a difference. I feel that I will continue growing as a landlord and I look forward to what will come once we expand even more.
