Meet Anicka Martin

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anicka Martin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Anicka, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

My parents.

They taught me to never give up on my dreams and goals.
Tenacity is something I was born with.
They showed me how to have a great work ethic and to continue to improve.
They instilled the importance of taking feedback without taking it personal so growth is achievable.

They taught me about making goals and how they are a blueprint for your life.
My dad used to have his own business when I was growing up and so did my grandma.
I grew up around entrepreneurship. This helped me to understand the importance of having a good business plan.

If something gets you down, get back up.
Just like the legendary Phoenix I will always rise again.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Build strong business relationships and local opportunities.

When you stay curious you find more business opportunities, connections, grants and more. All you have to do is keep going until you find what you were looking for. There is always an opportunity to find an answer, a solution or something new to help improve your business. If you need a better packaging container, a better vendor, a bigger office, just stay open to exploring what is out there for you, you may find it and build your business network. Working with local businesses is a great opportunity to expand your reach and build strong business relationships.

2. Become an expert in your field.

Research is vital. I love to research everything from ingredients to packaging. It has paid off for me. It has also introduced me to connections with local businesses who love the products that I create. It has helped me gain strong business connections in my community and to increase my return customers. I have had opportunities to teach about sustainable beauty in my community because of my expertise. When you research what is working in your field it helps you to make better decisions on how to move forward with your business plan too. Knowledge is power and when you become an expert you get more opportunities to share what you know.

3. Follow through and get feedback.

Follow up on emails and leads and customers that have bought your product or business services. Return business and repeat customers are immensely important for growth. Reach out and ask for feedback from people who have purchased your products and services. Business is not for the faint of heart. You have to make big decisions and follow through with them daily. It is wise to remember to have patience. Don’t be ashamed to ask for help from solid sources around you. Not everything happens overnight. A lot of businesses work for years before getting big successes. Patience is needed to keep going to achieve your goals.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When life gives you unpredictable moments, remember to pivot. Imagine the challenge from a different angle and slow down.
When you are flexible you can find a way around most problems.
Being solutions focused has helped minimize time dwelling on things that did not work out.
Learning from your mistakes is crucial and having the resiliency to keep going will make a difference.
It may not be easy to run a business, but it is worth it.
