We recently connected with Anna-Maria Orlu and have shared our conversation below.
Anna-Maria, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
It’s a quality that has been shaped by the vibrant spirit of my Nigerian heritage and the challenges I faced growing up in the foster system. Being Nigerian has instilled in me a deep sense of resilience, drawing from the rich tapestry of my culture where strength, perseverance, and community are celebrated virtues. Growing up in the foster system was undoubtedly a journey of trials, but it became the crucible in which my resilience was forged. It taught me to find strength in adversity, to adapt to change, and to embrace the beauty of resilience as a powerful force for transformation.
Fearlessness has always been a guiding principle in my pursuit of dreams. I’ve learned that in the face of uncertainty and adversity, being fearless is not the absence of fear but the triumph over it. It’s about daring to dream boldly and pursuing those dreams with unwavering determination.
One of my guiding lights through this journey is a favorite quote of mine: ‘To realize one’s destiny is a person’s only obligation.’ from the Alchemist. This philosophy propels me forward, reminding me that the pursuit of one’s destiny is not just a personal aspiration but a responsibility. It compels me to overcome obstacles, break barriers, and make a positive impact on the world.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In the tapestry of my journey, three qualities stand out as pillars of strength—patience, discipline, and a profound relationship with God. Patience has been my steadfast companion, allowing me to navigate challenges with grace, understanding that every step forward is a testament to endurance. Discipline has been my guiding force, shaping my habits and work ethic, ensuring that each endeavor is approached with diligence and dedication. Yet, above all, my relationship with God has been the anchor of my journey, providing solace in moments of uncertainty and fueling my spirit with unwavering faith. Together, these qualities form the bedrock of my resilience and success, reminding me that true strength lies in patience, discipline, and the divine connection that guides my path. I would anyone to really focus on your purpose, write short term goals and make strides daily towards those goals. Remember to give yourself grace while pursuing your dreams and remember God placed that purpose in your heart for a reason.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho has been my favorite book and a guiding light in my personal and developmental journey, imparting invaluable wisdom that has left an indelible mark on my perspective and choices. At its core, “The Alchemist” serves as a profound reminder to pursue one’s dreams with unwavering determination and to listen to the whispers of the heart. The story of Santiago’s journey resonates deeply, echoing the universal quest for purpose and personal legend. One key lesson from the book is the importance of embracing the journey itself, recognizing that every experience, whether seemingly positive or challenging, contributes to the grand tapestry of our lives. It has taught me the significance of resilience in the face of obstacles and the beauty of self-discovery that unfolds along the way. It emphasizes the power of faith, both in oneself and in a higher purpose.
