We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Anne McCombie & Renato Abbate. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Anne & Renato.
Hi guys! We have so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
Hi!! Thanks for having us! Optimism stems from several sources. It comes from a fundamental belief in the power of positivity and the potential for growth and change in any situation. It arises from personal experiences where optimism has enabled us to overcome some of our toughest challenges. By surrounding ourselves with supportive and like-minded individuals, such as a partner who shares our optimism and encourages us to aim higher, it further fuels any positive outlook. Also, you have to maintain a focus on the possibilities rather than limitations and liberate yourself from the constraints of perfection. That most certainly helps with resiliency and motivation, especially in the face of adversity. Then just relax and enjoy the journey.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We are an energetic and dynamic duo who focus on ceramic and copper repoussé artistry. We have embarked on an exhilarating journey fueled by inspiration and passion. Our artistic endeavors transcend boundaries, leading us from the serene coastal islands of the Atlantic to the rugged cliffs of the Mediterranean.
Our transformative experience at the “No Boundaries International Artist Colony” at the onset of 2024 has ignited a newfound zeal for exploration and creation. What once began as igniting sparks of creativity within our local community, we are now set now traversing the continent and seeking inspiration in every corner of the globe.
In April, our most recent artistic odyssey was showcased at the Soda Pop Gallery in Downtown Wilmington, where our latest works are infused with the essence of our recent adventures in Italy are captivating audiences with their vibrancy and vitality.
But our journey doesn’t end there. This summer, we will embark on a two-month cross-country expedition, traversing the nation’s highways and byways, spreading our love for art and life across the country. Along the way, we will conduct art classes, sharing our techniques and enthusiasm with eager learners, while also immersing ourselves in the diverse landscapes and cultures of America.
Our artistic pilgrimage will culminate in a grand spectacle at the New Elements Art Gallery in downtown Wilmington, NC in September, where we will unveil the masterpieces born from our cross-country odyssey. These works will serve as a testament to our boundless creativity, unyielding spirit, and unwavering dedication to living life to the fullest.
Our journey is not just about creating art; it’s about embracing life’s adventures, embracing the unknown, and inspiring others to do the same. Through our art and our experiences, we will spread a message of joy, creativity, and boundless possibility, leaving an indelible mark on the world one masterpiece at a time.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Our artistic journey has been deeply influenced by a combination of unique experiences and valuable skills. Some key elements that have significantly impacted our journey would have to be embracing the philosophy of dreaming BIG. Thinking outside the box has empowered us to push the boundaries of creativity. Refuse to conform to conventional norms and instead be the weird one. If you dare to explore uncharted territories and take on a fearless approach to life’s challenges, artistic or otherwise, it will lead to innovation and originality in your work, setting you apart from the crowd. TRAVEL! Traveling enriches your artistic journey/ your world by exposing you to diverse cultures, landscapes, and experiences. Immersing yourself in unfamiliar environments will broaden your perspective, allowing you to draw inspiration from a myriad of sources. Whether it’s the colors of a coastal sunset or the textures of a mountainous vista, each destination fuels your creativity and enriches your artistic repertoire. Also…Tetris. A childhood obsession with Tetris has honed such refined spatial reasoning skills that are now applicable regularly in our artistic pursuits. Whether it’s organizing our workspace, designing intricate patterns, or arranging elements within our artwork, this skill has become an invaluable asset in our creative process.
And here’s our invaluable advice to fellow artists:
Make More Art: Remind yourself to prioritize the act of creation above all else. Embrace the process of making art as a journey of self-discovery and expression.
Don’t Stress: Understand that struggles and challenges are inevitable, but they do not define your artistic journey. Instead of dwelling on worries, focus on the present moment and trust in your ability to overcome obstacles.
Let Go of the Past: Recognize that some of the greatest opportunities in life may arise from letting go of past hardships or limitations. Embrace change and remain open to new possibilities, knowing that each experience contributes to your growth as an artist and as an individual.
Okay, so before we go, we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Collaboration is indeed a powerful catalyst for growth, as it allows for the exchange of ideas, techniques, and inspiration among like-minded individuals. Creativity offers us an ever-expanding bubble for potential collaborations. The more energy and passion you invest, the more you will grow and evolve within yourself.
We are currently booking ceramics and copper repoussé workshops around the country. This not only provides us with the opportunity to share our skills and knowledge with others but also allows us to connect with and inspire a diverse range of creative minds. Collaborating with others in these workshops can spark new ideas, foster innovation, and ultimately, lead to greater artistic outcomes for us all.
By actively seeking partners to collaborate with, we are not only expanding our own creative network but also contributing to the collective growth of the artistic community. Together, we can fuel the bubble of creativity, pushing its boundaries and exploring new frontiers in artistry. Your commitment to collaboration and inspiration serves as a beacon for others to join in the journey of artistic exploration and discovery.
