Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Anthony Palmer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Anthony, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
I love this question because every artist or creative, no matter who you are, goes through this. The way I find my way out of the dark depths of creativity blocks is to put all my attention towards something completely different. I first acknowledge I am just not feeling the creative juices and need to distract my mind. I emphasize telling your mind that its okay to not be a creative genius right that very moment. Next I choose an activity that requires little stress or simply gives me joy. I recently took up working out and sometimes the clarity I get after shutting off my brain and simply sweating off the stress is magical. Creatives have other interests or hobbies, but we feel if we give into these vices and don’t suffer through finding that inspiration that we will suddenly combust.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Anthony Palmer and I am from Salt Lake City, Utah. I am in love and this isn’t your typical love story. This love story started from a very young age and has taken a hold of every being of my soul. No this isn’t about a girl I fell head over heels for, but even better it’s about the art of film. I knew years ago, staying awake way past my bed time, watching Sigourney weaver fight for her life against a never seen before alien that all I every wanted to do for the rest fo my life was be apart of the magic of cinema. This love has lead me to find my niche and skill in directing music videos. I now own a production company and find myself falling in love all over again everyday I get to do this job.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three hardest lessons I had to learn were empathy, self authenticity, and letting go of the past. First if you want to be in this career and already struggle with self doubt or anxiety then I cannot stress enough that you have empathy for yourself. You will make mistakes and fail, but if you can understand those experiences are only lessons then you will succeed faster. Second just be yourself plain and simple. There is going to be so many people that try and sway your opinions, but the best art is created from your dreams. Lastly its inevitable you experience life events outside of your creative journey so its important to know there is always tomorrow and you can change at any time.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I made the biggest life switch this year when I decided to get sober and change my life habits. I went through hell and back, but the reward of coming out the other side healthy and more motivated than ever truly was the best decision I have ever made. My goals are actually becoming reality and having a regular routine has made me more successful than I could have imagined.
