Meet Anthony Pero

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Anthony Pero. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Anthony below.

Anthony, so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.
I’ve been a social media manager for over 10 years, and I’ve worked in a variety of businesses and industries. In that time, I’ve learned a lot about effective communication. Here are a few things that have helped me develop my skills:

Active listening.

One of the most important things I’ve learned is the importance of active listening. This means really paying attention to what the other person is saying, and not just waiting for your turn to talk. It also means asking clarifying questions and summarizing what you’ve heard to make sure you understand.

Clear and concise communication.

When you’re communicating on social media, you need to be clear and concise. People are busy and don’t have time to read long, rambling messages. Get to the point quickly and use simple language that everyone can understand.

Empathy.

It’s important to be empathetic when you’re communicating with people on social media. Try to put yourself in their shoes and understand their perspective. This will help you build rapport and create a more positive and engaging experience for everyone involved.

Use of visuals.

Social media is a visual medium, so it’s important to use visuals to your advantage. This could include using images, videos, or infographics to break up your text and make your messages more engaging.

Be consistent.

When you’re communicating on social media, it’s important to be consistent. This means posting regularly, using the same tone and voice, and following the same branding guidelines. This will help you build trust and credibility with your audience.

I’ve learned a lot about effective communication over the years, and I’m still learning new things all the time. But these are the key things that have helped me develop my skills and become a better social media manager.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As the Social Media Manager at Cleveland State University. It’s not just a job for me – it’s a daily adventure where I get to dive into the stories of our fantastic students and share their journeys of triumph.

I’m not just pushing out content; I’m weaving narratives. Imagine being able to connect with students who are smashing through barriers, conquering challenges, and reaching their goals. Every success story we share becomes a beacon of inspiration for both the campus community and beyond.

The coolest part? It’s not just about books and lectures. We’re teaming up with great partners, like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The 27 Club Coffee, Cleveland Vibes and more. It’s like mixing the rhythm of education with the electric energy of the arts – a combo that brings our stories to life in a whole new way. It’s a great way to tie everything into our messaging that the City is our Campus.

So, in a nutshell, being the Social Media Manager at Cleveland State University is about being a storyteller, an adventurer, and a connector. I’m all about giving you a front-row seat to the incredible stories and partnerships that make our campus buzz with energy.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge stand out as pivotal in shaping my path. These attributes not only propelled my growth but also continue to serve as guiding principles for anyone embarking on their own journey:

Adaptability: The ability to adapt to new circumstances, technologies, and challenges has been a cornerstone of my journey. In an ever-evolving world, being open to change and embracing it as an opportunity for growth has allowed me to remain relevant and responsive. My advice to those starting out is to cultivate a mindset of continuous learning. Seek out new experiences, be willing to step outside your comfort zone, and never shy away from acquiring new skills or knowledge. Flexibility and adaptability are the armor that will help you thrive amidst uncertainty.

Effective Communication: Throughout my journey, effective communication has been a skill that’s consistently propelled me forward. Whether it’s conveying ideas, collaborating with diverse teams, or connecting with an audience, the ability to articulate thoughts clearly and listen attentively is paramount. To those at the beginning of their journey, I suggest honing your communication skills. Read widely, practice expressing your thoughts concisely, and actively engage in conversations. Remember, communication isn’t just about speaking – it’s about understanding and fostering meaningful connections.

Resilience and Perseverance: Challenges are an inevitable part of any journey. Resilience, the ability to bounce back from setbacks, and perseverance, the determination to push through obstacles, have been vital in my progress. My advice for newcomers is to embrace failures as learning opportunities. Develop a mindset that views setbacks as stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks. Channel setbacks into motivation and use them to refine your skills, strategies, and goals. Remember, success often comes to those who persist through difficulties.

In summary, the qualities of adaptability, effective communication, and resilience have been instrumental in shaping my journey. To those starting out, I encourage you to cultivate these qualities. Embrace change with an open mind, refine your communication skills to foster connections, and approach challenges with determination. Your journey will be uniquely yours, but these principles can serve as steadfast companions as you navigate the path ahead.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Absolutely, I’m totally on the lookout for individuals and groups to team up and collaborate with! I’m all about making awesome things happen together.

I’m looking to collaborate with restaurants in the downtown area, entertainment venues, hotels, bakeries, coffee shops, sports teams, museums and more!
