Meet Atalanta Moonfire

We were lucky to catch up with Atalanta Moonfire recently and have shared our conversation below.

Atalanta, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

Throughout my life I have worn many hats. I have gone from being a dancer and model to a paralegal, studying forensic science, and even a judge’s assistant. Now an author, spiritual advisor, and teacher of bone divination, I have found my passion and true self.

Knowing I was going to receive criticism from those opposing my decision to pursue this avenue for a career, I still pushed on to live my dream. Even though I have been pagan since I was a teenager, most of my family only found out about it 15 years ago. This was a whole new avenue of coming out of the broom closet. I was stepping into becoming a public figure in my community.

Even though I hit resistance, even from very close family members, I continued to move forward.

From a young age I was taught that if I wanted something I had to get it. No questioning. No doubting. Just doing. And it’s okay that I might think differently or look differently. It’s okay that I am an individual. Dig deep inside yourself and recognize your unique attributes and appreciate them.

When we hit a wall whether that be literal or symbolic, we have to remind ourselves again that our gifts are there to share and we need to keep sharing.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My name is Atalanta Moonfire and I am an author, spiritual advisor, and teacher of bone divination.

Bone divination is an ancient form of communicating with your ancestors from recent through thousands of years ago in order to get information of upcoming events in your life. Through the bones your ancestors can communicate to you, giving you advice and opportunities.

In my tradition, bones, shells, and curios are thrown on a mat usually made of animal skin. Through where they land and the other pieces they land by, I am able to read what the ancestors are speaking to you. This is a very personal form of divination as it is a direct contact through generations.

I have been practicing divination since a teenager, professionally reading from the age of 25 years old. In my late 30s I was introduced to osteomancy, which is the art of throwing bones.

Although it is not necessary to be a witch to practice bone divination (As it is practiced in all religions, traditions, faiths, and belief systems.), I have been a witch since 14 years old. I am an eclectic witch, focusing on Hoodoo and Hecatean Magic. I am also High Priestess of Sacred Moon Coven for over 8 years. Graduate of Harvard EDU “Omens, Oracles, and Prophecies”, I continue my education each year with a different area of study. I am a Reiki Master and currently ordained through 2 organizations.

In 2019 I published, “Throwing the Bones Divination For the Modern Practitioner”, one of only a few instructional books that exist in the world on bone divination. I wanted to not only share this beautiful ancient practice but I also wanted to teach it to as many people as I could!

I began traveling the US for book signings, teaching classes, and reading bones. I have also been teaching classes internationally. I’ve continued to do so for the last couple of years and now I am stepping back just a little bit to finish my second book, “Throwing the Bones, Tools For the Advanced Diviner”, which will be coming out in the next couple of months.

I am also creating beautiful bone pendulums as well as intention candles with special herbs, oils, and animal bones for spirit intent.

With all of these new and wonderful things coming up, I cannot wait to meet everyone who is interested in learning about throwing the bones!

Please join me on Pagan World TV, Thursday nights, 8:00 p.m. Eastern for the second season of Everyday Witchcraft!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I would definitely say my communication skills have helped me the most. I think it’s important to know how to communicate what it is you want people to know or what it is you want to teach or you want to share. Try to look at all aspects on the way community might see what you have to offer. Do not stay trapped in thinking your ideas and your products cannot be appreciated by everyone. Find the connection between what you have and what the people are around you and everywhere!

Being open-minded is another quality I have that has helped my journey. Being willing to explore other paths will take you on adventures you could never imagine!

I always have fun in everything I do! That is the best advice I have to give anyone. Love what you do and do what you love. And most of all, smile and enjoy the ride!

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

There are a few I can honestly say that have been an essential part of my success in living and continuing my journey. Not in any particular order, I would like to mention the following special people in my life.

I will begin with my parents. From a very young age they showed me that if you wanted to be something or do something there was never a question that it could be done. I grew up not knowing that there was any other option. Without even realizing it they were teaching me how to manifest my dreams into reality.

Next is Tim. Tim was the first and continues to be, one of my biggest cheerleaders even through the rocky moments in our personal lives. When I came to him and told him I wanted to write a book and teach and be a spiritual advisor professionally, he never even blinked an eye. Even though our ideas and paths are different, he has always supports me without question.

I now mention Patrick. Patrick is a life-long friend who I reunited with over the loss of a mutual friend. We picked right back up where we left off and, in catching up, he discovered what my idea was of writing my book and go public with my teachings. Not only did he offer to design my book (and did an AMAZING job) but he walked me through every step of production and promotion. He taught me essentials like website design and image development. He inspired me and made me realize I could combine all of my interests together into one beautiful vision.

I save my son, Daemion, for my final mention. Daemion has always given me unconditional love and support in every area of my life. He is a beautiful spirit, an enlightened soul, and an inspiration. His sense of adventure and artistic talent always shines. He is my light.
