Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Audrey Brianne. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Audrey, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I’m stating the obvious in saying that there’s most unfortunately not a lot of black talent seen in the styling field. There are some (and they’re absolutely killing it, including people like Wayman and Micah, June Ambrose, Apuje Kalu, Jennifer Austin and more). However, it’s few and far between and ultimately sometimes reduced down to “luck” that POC prevail in a predominantly white industry.
I learned early on from my dad who is in the telecom corporate world and one of few African American males doing what he does on his level that it’s possible to rise above.
Watching him climb the ladder, gain respect and remain humble showed me how to do the same in my approach to business.
I’ve had to work hard, tireless hours both interning and assisting to get to the point of key stylist. I knew getting into this field that I would probably have to work harder than my white counterparts to be seen. I happily did the work (and would do it again).
When times got tough I fell back on family, friends and my husband to keep me going. I’d say a strong support system behind the scenes is crucial to most any successful career. Behind me is a village of people rooting me on and challenging me to give my all. I don’t want to disappoint them.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’ve been styling for the last eleven years with an emphasis on celeb red carpet and appearances. I love the immediate reaction to looks on the carpet- it’s a very quick turnaround and the masses don’t lie, either they love it or not.
I enjoy looking at a person and being able to assess what cuts, fabrics and colors would best accentuate their silhouette and frame. When I look at a wardrobe rack items immediately begin to highlight themselves. I always know I’ve found “the one” when I get goosebumps.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Thinking outside the box, attention to detail/organizational skills and immersing ones self in the fashion industry helped me most to get where I am today.
My biggest tidbits of advice for someone up and coming is be prepared for the labor. Fashion entails a lot of physical labor and constant emailing and communication that no one ever sees. Be as organized as possible- including taking notes, using some sort of online calendar and physically writing down things. Lastly, brush up on something in the industry at least once a day. That may look like flipping through a magazine, browsing Instagram/social media, looking online… whatever it is, make it a routine and do it every day to stay in the know.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always open to collaboration. To date I’ve been fortunate to have helped creatively and styled select campaigns for John Varvatos, Clocks and Colours and I’m With The Band.
I’d love to partner with both jewelry and apparel brands looking to do capsule collections, as that kind of intro to the market can grow into a bigger collaborative effort if well-received.
