Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ayla Roldan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Ayla, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Growing up I have always heard “You have so much potential, you’re going to go so far” but never offering any direction to do so. While also hearing “don’t waste it away” at the same time. I didn’t understand it fully growing up, until a few years ago. For starters, being a female in most industries, it’s hard to be taken seriously. Most people look at men and go to men first prior to accepting a woman can do the same thing, if not better. Then on top of that, you add an attractive female into that, and it’s 2x harder. I was promised and told a lot within my 20’s of trying to figure it out basically on my own. Trying different industries of work and skills until I started to find thing’s I found myself interested in learning more about. I have always enjoyed helping others, so finding the small success’s in thing’s like that is where I began to find confidence. Establishing confidence has helped immensely in pushing myself further and further and taking risk, and opportunities. I have been blessed to meet a handful of people along the way who has seen the potential in me and helped guide me in the right direction to channel that potential. I wake up every day and know that I am the only one who can make something happen in my life, and my daughters, so that is the main foundation of my success so far, and my future.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have my hands in a couple of different pots. Currently, I specialize in body contouring and opening up my second location in central Florida. I recently franchised a food truck based out of Polk county called The Lakehouse Kitchen, and expanded to Tampa, which I started by managing all of their catering side. I am partnered in a Land Clearing & development company called Central Land Clearing & Development. Lastly, I own a popsicle brand, which is a start up and we are based out of Tampa Fl and Jax Beach Fl!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
This one gets tricky….because everyone’s journey is different and everyone encounters different walks of life and paths. Some of the thing’s that have seemed to work for me are definitely learning to read people. Not everyone is cracked up to what they claim to be, and most people are not fully honest with themselves and others. It’s something I have to keep in mind as an empath and remember because it’ll save you from being taken advantage of and having the upper hand in situations. Another would be, Sacrifice and self discipline. I’m 28, I want to be out living my life to the fullest, but by making sacrifices and learning and maintaining self discipline it’s gotten me places I would have never expected. Lastly, finding appreciation in learning. My grandma once told me, “Nobody can ever take knowledge away from you.” That stuck with me to this day. There will never be a time in life where you know everything. By constantly learning, you are only doing yourself and others a favor, because you never know who or what you can help by the knowledge you hold.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My business partner, Moises Vazquez. He has definitely seen my potential everyone spoke about growing up, and pushed me out of my comfort zone to be successful. He has help guide me in different industries while placing massive trust within me. Which pushes me harder to follow through with whatever I am up against.
