Meet Bailey Chavez

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bailey Chavez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Bailey, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I’m not sure I’ll ever overcome imposter syndrome fully, to be perfectly honest. When I am having moments of doubt, I have found it helps to look back at my first few pieces to see how far I have come since I first started. I always try to remember that I would not be where I am if I didn’t start when I did. Imposter syndrome is real and can feel so mean but your ART is real and valid and if you love what you make then that’s ultimately what matters most!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hell y’all! I am Bailey Chavez and I own La Sad Girl Shop (lasadgirlshop.com). I’m a local small batch artist. I choose to be a small batch artist because I like being able to make new designs and products by hand with out having to mass produce my art. I feel that making small batch art some times one-offs makes each piece extra special because there’s a chance that the item you receive is one of a kind! Small batches also help me keep my art fresh and ever evolving. I personally jump from medium to medium when making art which I feel is important for my “imposter syndrome” because it helps remind me that I can break down those creative blocks and make just about anything I put effort into making!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
If your goal is to get your name out there or to get your products in a local shop, you have to put in the work. Reach out to every local shop via the email they have listed on their social media profiles! If you cannot find an email associated with the business you’d like to get in touch with, DM them. If you do not reach out how will they know how cute your art is? I’ve reached out to well over 100 shops through out the nation! I may have received over 90 rejections but I also received 10 enthusiastic acceptances! I have been able to sell my art in 10 different shops through out America because I took the time to reach out and show them my art via email or DM. I feel this is the best way to create a working relationship with your local community and get your art out there!

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My mom has been the most supportive with my art and small business since I started this in 2020. For “gifting holidays” like my birthday or Christmas, she’s gifted me printers, art supplies and gift cards for craft stores so I can continue to explore and expand on my artistic possibilities. Thank you mom!
