We recently connected with Beatriz Lima and have shared our conversation below.
Beatriz, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I think I was always confident, I know it’s sounds funny when someone says that, but for me it’s more like a reality. Since I was very young, I would ask my family to sit in the sofa and watch me perform, sometimes singing, sometimes acting like I was a part of a movie. Very young I always loved to participate in school presentations, and was never shy of being in the stage.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a female brazilian Dj. Music was always a passion, since very young it was always part of my life. I learned how to play guitar, piano and sing by myself, which is crazy as I came from a family with no musicians. When already grown I discovered a passion for eletronic music, something about it felt special, the way music is created and how it impacted me at that age. After migrating from Brazil to Canada about 2 years ago, I saw the opportunity to learn more about the passion and ended up figuring out I could be my own passion. I bought my first controller and started learning at home how to be a dj. Started with electronic music, after figuring out the electronic scene in Toronto wasn’t that welcoming I figured another passion: Brazilian Funk, which took me in places I never thought i would go so fast! With only 1 year of career as DJ BIA, I played in the biggest clubs in Toronto, and travelled to different provinces to do shows. Now I’m starting to think out of the box and maybe the old BIA who loves to sing and produce will be back in 2024.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Definitely the most important skill was having the knowledge of playing instruments and singing. Understand about music is a must have in this career. If you have a dream of being a Dj or want to get into the music industry in general, learn about music, make sure you understand a little bit of everything and for sure you gonna be way more confident to achieve your goals.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Definitely my mom coming to my first Dj show. She always hated eletronic music, but she came to my first show and cried and she saw me playing. At the end of the show, she hugged me and said “I’m so proud of you, I can finally see that you were born for this, you’re shining”. This was extremely impactful during my career, knowing that the most important person in my life, supports me this me this much.
