We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ben Bryant. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ben below.
Ben, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
That’s a tough one! That’s something I’ve struggled with a lot in the past. I feel like a part of us always has that doubt that we aren’t where we’re supposed to be, we’re not who we’re supposed to be, and we’re not doing what we’re supposed to be doing. You’re a small fish in a big pond, and you feel like you really don’t belong where you’re at.
Imposter syndrome is a feeling you get when you don’t feel successful or like you don’t belong. It’s something totally based on feeling, and not truth. We are all in the exact place we are supposed to be, which is moving forward. We are all the people we are supposed to be, but getting better. We are all just skilled as we should be, but learning more and growing every day. If you feel like an imposter today, take steps to feel like you belong tomorrow. Set goals and do what it takes to achieve those goals, because imposters don’t create goals. Even if you fall short, you’re who you’re supposed to be. Inaction affects your emotions in a real way, so get out and move and work on becoming the better self you want to be for tomorrow!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We connect people to water the way nature intended. Whether it be a pond, waterfall, fountain, or a combination of all three, water features turn any ordinary yard into a masterpiece that can be enjoyed by the whole family! We build, clean and maintain, and educate about water features and their ecological impact in local communities.
Literally all I do is a blast every single day! I love my job, I love playing with fish, splashing in water, learning about plants, and helping develop healthier local ecosystems. It is the best!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The ability to learn and adapt is one of the most important skills to me. Growing up was anything but ordinary, with my family and I crossing the country regularly on trips for work and ministry. Each day a unique adventure! Homeschooling on the go, my mom became amazing at teaching as we went, teaching me the perspective to see every experience as an opportunity for growth. This approach has been my anchor through all of the events of my life in recent years, helping me to become the person I am today.
While it may be similar, being teachable is a vital skill I learned. No matter your talent or knowledge, they’re of little use if you’re closed off to new lessons. Time and again, I’ve witnessed talented individuals get passed up by those willing to learn and better themselves. Eventually, learning always beats out talent.
Finally, letting pressure roll off. I’ve often let stress and pressure weigh me down more than they should. But whenever I just let things roll off, problems, pressures, worries all fade into the background instead of towering over me. It’s liberating actually when you let go, give it to God, and just move on. You’ll come out of problems the better for it if you do!
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My wife Mariah has always been the biggest supporter of me. At every stage of my career and business, she has stood by and supported me through the good times and the bad. Every day I am blown away by her care and love for me as she sacrifices to help me. Every day she supports me and is there for me, and I am so thankful for her place in my life!
