Meet Benjamin Hostetter

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Benjamin Hostetter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Benjamin, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My purpose. Wow. There’s so much information and confusion about ‘finding a purpose’ out there.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned about “Finding my Purpose” is that there’s a difference between gifts and purpose. My purpose has nothing to do with my gifts. My purpose has to do with the why behind my gifts.

To break it down: I’m gifted at music. I’m gifted in video. I’m gifted in tech. These gifts have allowed me to create a music program that gets results better than almost any other music course out there.

So I decided what to do based on my gifts, not based on some sort of magical ‘purpose’ that I’ve been created for. My purpose then came because there were very real reasons the course was important:

1. Music Education is Horrible.
2. People need a simpler way to understand Music.
3. I want to create wealth for my family.

This is my purpose for doing the Music Academy. But ultimately, I chose my direction based on my gifts.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

My name is Benjamin, and I’m a Musician and Entrepreneur at heart.

When I was in 2nd grade, I taught myself how to multiply numbers by staying up late, in my bed, punching numbers into a calculator.

I’ve always loved numbers, and problem-solving.

One of the coolest things I learned about music, is that it’s very mathematical. I used to love studying harmonies and rhythm, and in doing so, I began to realize how systematic music really is.

The frustrating part about taking piano lessons as a young kid, is that I felt like the lessons were unnecessarily complicated, and I’ve since realized that most people waste years trying to learn instruments the wrong way.

I’ve decided to change that.

I wanted music education to be simple. Easy to understand. And easy to learn. That’s why I created The Music Academy.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’ll break this down into 2 categories, the first 3 qualities are the 3 most important technical skills I’ve developed:

1. Music Theory
2. Videography
3. Software Engineering.

These skills have allowed me to create what I’ve created technically, but there are 3 far more important qualities that I had to develop that have gotten me where I am today:

1. Patience.
2. Learning how to learn quickly and effectively.
3. Problem-solving.

Of the 3, patience was the hardest, yet most important quality that I had to develop. All throughout my 20’s, I would spend weeks or months trying to create something, but then would give up after I felt like it wasn’t working. The Music Academy has been the first thing that I’ve committed to for 2+ years. The simple fact that I’ve spent years working on it, instead of months, has made all the difference.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
It depends on your goals.

However, if you’re an entrepreneur like myself, being more well-rounded is the way to go. When you have a variety of skills that compliment each other, it’s amazing how that can set you apart in the marketplace, giving you a 1-up against other creators or entrepreneurs, allowing you to provide value in a far more effective manner than most other people.
