We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bessy Adut a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bessy , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I am originally born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey there is a saying there from our ancestors “The strength you need is in the royal blood in your veins” Maybe that’s why I always felt like I have the strength I need within me. I also had to learn to be strong when I moved to Los Angeles many years ago to study film and decided to continue my life here. It hasn’t been easy being a woman in the industry but I believe I managed to grow a thick skin. In our business, things aren’t always easy. We get many rejections and put downs. However I do believe the key to success is keep going, one of my favorite quotes says “You fall back 9 times, get up 10.” giving up is not the answer but keep going is with persistence and patience.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a filmmaker who would like to be considered an ‘auter’ as I write, produce and direct my own materials most of the time. I am very versatile because I have a lot of narrative work, I am interested in making music videos as well as documentary films.
Most recently, I am working on making my 1st feature film which is going to be a hybrid genre of narrative and documentary titled “Searching for Goodness” My Manager/Producer introduced me to Armin Nasseri and we are working on the project together, we started doing interviews with scientists, animal rights activists, environmental activists and researchers in Antarctica already. We have a Fiscal Sponsorship from “From the Hearts Productions”
If we could get the rights, ‘heal the world” would be the soundtrack of our trailer or sizzle reel. One thing we would like to state is that: The true superheroes are the individuals who take it upon themselves to try to beat the odds and save the world to make it a better place.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe communications particularly storytelling is one of my super powers. Three qualities are: writing, producing and directing. And I am trying to put a project together where I will be able to use all these skills along with my on screen/hosting persona for a good cause. Superheroes won’t be coming to save the world so we need to come to the realization that we have to be the heroes. We all have it in us. And our super ‘human’ powers can all be different things. One person’s talent could be cooking, dancing, making music, being a great mom. It could be anything. As long as we help others and make the environment a better place it’s all good. And I have a quote I made up “Heroes have double lives” I believe in that and I live by it. I do have to have a day job as I pursue my dream job. I try to be a hero in both lives try to help people and community in every possible way that I can. My goal is to save the world and if I can’t do that literally by wearing a cape, I would like to do that by spreading enlightenment to the world.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am absolutely looking for producers, executive producers, talent agents anybody that can help me to raise the required funds for this movie that eventually we would like to go film in Antarctica. If anybody is reading and this project sounds interesting to you please definitely feel free to reach out.
On the creative aspect, I am blessed to be working with some amazing people. Lately we are a very small crew filming/editing what we can and I am thankful to my collaborator Armin Naseri for helping me shoot, edit as well as apply for grants. Matt Chasin also is a huge help. I have other collaborators I have been working on this project such as Elaine Roberts, Kelly Lansing, Jessica Foster, Daniel Twieg, Ali Aksu Sandy Stenzel and many more filmmaker friends. However as this is going to be my very 1st feature film and it takes a long distance travel to the bottom of the world to literally ‘get to the bottom of this’ environmental issues we are having we will need some funding and yes, we could use any collaboration with that from production companies, studios, networks.
We are also looking for more environmental organizations or activists to interview whether they are known public figures or not. Anyone who has an Antarctica experience can tell us their stories. That’s what we are looking for at the moment.
