We recently connected with Bethany Rose and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bethany, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
I guess you could say that I have always been a risk taker. It really started with my goal to play Division 1 basketball in college. I grew up in a small city in Iowa, and was a late bloomer but I always had a vision, I just had to figure out how to make it happen. When I got the opportunity to play at a junior college in Iowa, I took the risk so I could be one step closer to playing at the D1 level. My risk paid off, as I ended up transferring to a D1 school – California State University, Fullerton. This helped me see that risk taking can pay off, but I had to work hard to achieve the desired results. I also learned along the way that I didn’t want to live in regret. I would rather take a risk and try to achieve my goals/desires rather than never know.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an artist in every sense of the word. I am a singer/recording artist as well as a fine artist. I guess you could say I that I am drawn to the creative arts! However, I am also very business-minded. It’s taken me some time to navigate the world of making dreams a reality and creating businesses out of the things I love doing.
As a singer, I write music, record, and have had the wonderful opportunity of singing with a variety of other recording artists. I work in both the English and Spanish markets. I write and record r&b/pop and also bachata.
As a fine artist, I established my business as – B. Robert Art. I create large, abstract paintings using a variety of mediums. I show my work in art galleries, at art festivals, and partner with different companies to create fine art reproductions of my work. I also design handbags and shoes with my unique designs.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One of my strongest qualities is my perseverance. I truly believe that with a strong mindset, hard work and discipline, I can achieve what I set out to do. The creative industries are tough so perseverance has kept me going.
Being organized is a strong skill of mine. Because I am juggling multiple things at one time, I have to be extremely organized so I can move quickly, be efficient and stay on top of goals/deadlines.
Discipline is a strong quality of mine. When I establish a goal, I go after it. Having to be at the gym at 4:30am in college to go to the training room before practice really showed me what was required to achieve the results I wanted to achieve. Nothing comes easy, and nothing comes for free.
Advice I would give to those early in their journey is to practice setting reasonable goals and writing down the steps to achieve those goals. Sometimes this can be baby steps, but every step is a good practice of discipline and it builds confidence. I also always recommend anyone and everyone to get mentorship in their area of expertise. This helps with understanding the expectations/hard work that goes into achieving business goals/positions. A quick way anyone can develop organizational skills is to write down to-do lists and get a filing cabinet! This is a good way to start organizing files for quick and easy access.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The biggest obstacle I face is feeling like I never have enough time to do all of things I need to do for my businesses! What has helped me tremendously is to invest in hiring people to assist in certain areas that require a lot of my time. This has allowed me to focus on the areas I need to focus on and gain support in other areas.
