Meet Betty Lam

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Betty Lam. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Betty below.

Betty, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism stems from a combination of life experiences, self-reflection, and conscious effort. I think I was born with a naturally sunny disposition – but that’s not to say my optimism wasn’t something I had to work on.

I’ve cultivated a positive outlook on life over time.

Optimism, to me, is the belief that things will work out for the best in the end, even in the face of challenges. It’s about maintaining hope, and trusting that the future holds promise.

Instead of questioning why certain things are happening to me, I like to shift my perspective to focus on what I can learn from the situation. By asking yourself what lessons or insights the experience is providing, you open yourself up to growth and personal development. Embracing a mindset of curiosity and reflection can also help you uncover valuable teachings that may not have been apparent at first glance.

Having a positive attitude in life is important, but it’s distinct from optimism.

While positivity focuses on staying cheerful and upbeat in difficult situations, optimism delves deeper into believing that these challenges are temporary and surmountable.

To keep my optimism alive, I surround myself with supportive and encouraging group of girlfriends (S/O to the GFS at @Glamfriends.to !), practice gratitude regularly, set achievable goals, and remind myself of past successes in overcoming adversity.

By maintaining a growth mindset and facing challenges with resilience, I nurture and sustain my optimistic outlook on life.

[Practicing Gratitude]

Practicing gratitude has played a significant role in helping me keep my optimism alive.
When you regularly express gratitude for the people, things, and experiences that bring you joy and fulfillment, you cultivate a positive mindset that can counteract negative thoughts and emotions.

I continually remind myself of all the things I am grateful for and actively promote gratitude among those around me.

Maintaining a positive outlook has become almost instinctual for me. This mindset has been cultivated through years of honing the skill of recognizing the positive aspects of life, building a network of like-minded friends, embracing a positive way of living, and confronting negative thoughts head-on.

Being optimistic doesn’t entail ignoring negative circumstances, but rather facing them with a hopeful attitude and a belief that better outcomes can be achieved.

[Toxic Positivity]

Staying optimistic while avoiding toxic positivity is a delicate balance that I strive to maintain.

I have always been a happy and smiley child. It’s how the world saw me. I think in my Asian household – we confuse vulnerability with weakness. If and when I am upset, I have found young Betty trying to brush those feelings aside and definitely not wanting anyone to know that I was anything less than happy.

Today I would tell my younger self to acknowledge her feelings and allow herself to experience those feelings fully.

It’s important to recognize that it’s okay not to be okay sometimes. By accepting my emotions, I can address them in a healthy way rather than suppressing them in the name of false positivity.

Aside from practicing gratitude – it’s also helpful to practice mindfulness. Taking time to appreciate the good things in my life and being present in the moment helps me stay grounded in reality while maintaining a positive outlook.

This allows me to find silver linings in difficult situations without dismissing the challenges that come with them.

Lastly, I have my girlfriends and chosen family to thank – for allow me to express my true feelings without judgment.

By building a strong support system, I can share both my joys and struggles authentically, fostering a genuine sense of optimism without veering into toxic positivity!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey as a content creator and social media coordinator, three qualities that have been incredibly impactful are creativity, adaptability, and communication skills. Creativity has allowed me to come up with unique ideas and engaging content that resonates with my audience.

I consider myself a naturally inquisitive and multi-faceted / multi-passionate individual. Whenever I develop an interest in something new, I immerse myself in it by watching YouTube videos, conducting thorough Google searches, and listening to podcasts related to the subject.

Throughout my life, I have often encountered opportunities that were previously unexplored by me. Despite acknowledging that there were more qualified individuals for certain roles or projects, I have consistently taken the initiative to apply and give it my best shot. While I may not always succeed, I approach each endeavor with dedication and strive to excel when given the chance. One notable experience was when I was invited to pitch a Paramount Thriller social media campaign, despite having no prior experience in that specific genre. Through my creativity and adaptability, I not only secured the project but also went on to succeed in similar ventures down the line, transitioning from my usual fashion content creation to a different, more thrilling domain. My content creator life has allowed me to go from doing Beauty Clinic campaigns, to having a more professional tone with Square project, to thrillers, to doing wedding content creator… switching things up is fun for me!

Being adaptable has been crucial in navigating the ever-changing landscape of social media platforms and trends.

Strong communication skills have enabled me to effectively convey messages and engage with followers.

For those early in their journey, my advice would be to focus on developing these three key areas. To enhance creativity, practice brainstorming regularly, seek inspiration from various sources, and experiment with different formats and styles. To improve adaptability, stay informed about the latest social media trends, be open to trying new strategies, and be willing to pivot when necessary. I also like to look at different social media pages for inspiration! Attending various events and engaging in conversations with individuals from diverse industries can also serve as a source of inspiration and motivation.

Finally, to strengthen communication skills, practice writing and crafting compelling messages, engage with your audience regularly, and actively listen to feedback to understand what resonates with them. By honing these qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge, you can set yourself up for success in the world of content creation and social media coordination.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always eager to form connections and engage in collaborations and paid campaigns that resonate with my personal brand and values. I have a particular fondness for projects that contribute to worthwhile causes.

I am enthusiastic about hosting more Getaway Collaborations, whether they are local or international in scope. One of the aspects I cherish most about my work is storytelling. When promoting a brand or business, I am drawn to projects that allow me to delve deeply into an individual’s background and history, uncovering their unique passions and narratives that may not be readily accessible online.

Since 2020, several individuals have suggested that I explore voice-acting or audiobook reading, and I am wholeheartedly open to such opportunities should they arise!

Every year, being a content creator opens up exciting opportunities for me to explore new things or venture into different industries with my projects.
I can’t wait to discover the amazing people I’ll collaborate with this year!
Maybe it could be you – how awesome would that be?! 😊
