We recently connected with Bill Zima and have shared our conversation below.
Bill, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
Drawing from the vibrant tapestry of my life’s journey, as chronicled in the introduction to my new book BLISS Busker Q’s, self-care has been an integral part of my odyssey toward self-discovery and sharing. This journey, which began in the 1980s at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, was not just about acquiring a formal education in the visual arts but diving deep into the essence of expression and communication through art. It was here, in this realm of creativity and expression, that the seeds of my self-care practices were sown, intertwined with my quest for understanding happiness and gratitude. My venture into self-care has always been a deeply personal and evolving practice. Initially, it took the form of immersing myself in the world of visual arts, where canvas and paint were not just tools but companions on my journey. This artistic endeavor was more than a means of self-expression; it was a sanctuary, a form of meditation that allowed me to explore the depths of my identity and communicate with the world in a language beyond words.
However, as my journey unfolded, I found myself yearning for something more, something that transcended the visual and tactile aspects of art. This longing led me to delve into the concepts of happiness and gratitude, enriching my understanding of these nuanced emotions. A pivotal step in this exploration was the initiation of a gratitude journal. What began as a simple daily practice of noting three things I was grateful for evolved into a ritual that anchored me in positivity. This seemingly small exercise became a cornerstone of my self-care routine, providing a daily reflection that kept me grounded in the present and appreciative of life’s blessings.
As my quest for self-understanding and expression broadened, so did my approach to self-care. The internet era opened new avenues of knowledge, and I eagerly embraced this world, enriching my artistic background with certifications in Happiness, Emotional Intelligence, Behavioral Economics, and Leadership, and eventually qualifying as a person-centered counsellor here in Scotland. Each of these steps added depth and perspective to my understanding of the human mind and emotions, further informing my self-care practices.
The revelation of my autism diagnosis a couple of years ago brought clarity and a newfound focus to my self-care regimen. Understanding my affinity for lists and structured thinking helped me embrace these aspects of myself, integrating them into my daily life and self-care practices. This self-awareness became a driving force behind the creation of BLISS Busker, a reflection of my journey and a compilation of questions aimed at fostering self-exploration and discovery.
BLISS Busker, with its focus on the facets of Body, Life, Identity, Society, and Stuff, is not just a project but a testament to the power of self-care in enhancing personal effectiveness. Sharing my knowledge, experiences, and insights through this platform has been a form of self-care in itself, allowing me to connect with others and share the beauty of self-discovery.
In conclusion, my self-care practices, rooted in the arts, gratitude, and continuous learning, have been instrumental in my effectiveness as an individual and a creator. They have allowed me to remain centered, resilient, and open to new experiences, ultimately enabling me to share my journey and insights with the world. From the Scottish Highlands, where I now find solace and inspiration, I continue to advocate for the transformative power of self-care, hoping to inspire others to embark on their own journeys toward self-discovery and bliss.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
In the serene expanse of the Scottish Highlands, where the landscape whispers ancient tales and the air carries the promise of inspiration, I have found my sanctuary for creativity. Here, amidst the rugged beauty and tranquil solitude, my journey as an artist and author has flourished, giving birth to projects that are not only a reflection of my soul but also a gift to those who seek solace in the embrace of art and storytelling. At the heart of my endeavors is the BLISS Busker project, a multifaceted exploration of self-discovery and sharing. Through BLISS Busker Q’s and BLISS Busker Sketches, I invite individuals to embark on their own odysseys of self-understanding and relaxation. The BLISS Busker Q’s serve as a compass for introspection, guiding users through a series of questions designed to delve into the depths of one’s being. These queries, rooted in my personal journey through art, happiness studies, and the understanding of my identity as an autistic individual, aim to foster a deeper connection with oneself and the world.
Expanding on this concept, the BLISS Busker Sketches offer a tangible experience of tranquility and mindfulness. These pocket-sized sketchbooks, adorned with themes ranging from the vibrant cultures of the world to the calming patterns of nature, are crafted to be a sanctuary of peace for the mind and soul. Each sketch is an invitation to slow down, to trace and fill the images with attention and care, allowing the act of drawing to become a meditative escape from the chaos of daily life.
Beyond the realm of personal development, my passion for mythology and storytelling has led to the creation of “Whispers of Time”. This book is a testament to my lifelong fascination with the stories that have shaped human culture and consciousness. Drawing from my formal art training and personal interpretations, “Whispers of Time” is an homage to the power of storytelling, exploring myths and fables from around the globe. It’s a journey through the tales that have endured the test of time, reflecting the universal themes of love, courage, and the quest for knowledge.
What excites me most about my work is the opportunity to connect with others on a profound level, to offer moments of reflection, joy, and peace through the mediums of art and storytelling. My projects are an extension of my quest for understanding—of myself, of humanity, and of the mysteries that bind us.
Looking ahead, I am thrilled to announce the expansion of the BLISS Busker series, with new sketch themes and questions designed to inspire and engage. Additionally, my exploration of mythology will continue with upcoming books that delve deeper into the legends and lore of cultures yet to be explored. These projects, rooted in a deep respect for the diversity and richness of human tradition, are intended to celebrate our shared heritage and the endless capacity for imagination.
My brand, my art, is an invitation to journey within and beyond, to discover the bliss that resides in self-exploration and the shared experience of wonder. In the Scottish Highlands, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the legacy of countless generations, I am reminded daily of the power of storytelling and the arts as conduits for connection and understanding. It is here, in this haven of creativity, that I continue to weave my tales and sketches, hoping to touch the hearts of those who find their way to my work.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In reflecting upon my journey—a tapestry woven from the threads of creativity, self-discovery, and an unwavering quest for understanding—I recognize three pivotal elements that have sculpted my path: the revelation of my autism diagnosis, the cultivation of presence, and the unyielding commitment to my ideas. These pillars have not only defined my personal and professional life but have also guided me towards a deeper, more meaningful connection with the world around me.
The journey to self-awareness took a significant turn with my autism diagnosis. For years, I had been a professional artist, creating encaustic paintings inspired by the natural world that surrounded me. Yet, in the quiet corners of my studio, I indulged in a private world of art, one that reveled in numbers, lists, and the intricate dance of thoughts that flowed like a secret river through my mind. This diagnosis was not a label but a lens, bringing into focus the unique way in which I perceive and interact with the world. It was the key that unlocked the door to my “Architecture of Time” exhibition, where I unveiled works that celebrated this newfound clarity. The diagnosis encouraged me to embrace my fascination with mythology, allowing me to craft what I consider the “Mother of all lists.” This ongoing project is not just a compilation of tales; it’s an extension of my being, offering endless joy and a profound sense of purpose.
Presence, the second cornerstone of my journey, is the golden thread that weaves through every aspect of my life. It is more than a skill; it is a way of being, a conscious choice to fully inhabit each moment. Whether I’m meandering by a river’s edge or navigating the vibrant chaos of the city, presence adds depth and texture to my experiences, allowing me to connect deeply with the here and now. This quality transforms ordinary moments into extraordinary ones, enriching my life with a richness of experiences that fuel my creativity. My small drawings, which I carry with me always, are tangible manifestations of this presence, enabling me to capture the essence of a moment, no matter where I am.
Lastly, my journey is anchored by an unwavering commitment to my ideas. This is not just about determination or resilience; it’s about a profound belief in the value of bringing those ideas to life. Each concept, no matter how fleeting or complex, is a seed that I feel compelled to nurture. My books, my art—they are the physical manifestations of this commitment, the tactile embodiments of my thoughts and dreams. They are proof that with dedication, even the most ephemeral ideas can be transformed into something tangible, something real.
To those at the beginning of their journey, my advice is simple: be kind to yourself. Embrace your unique perspective, be present in your experiences, and commit to your ideas with all your heart. Remember, self-compassion is not just an act of kindness; it is a foundation upon which you can build a life filled with creativity, purpose, and joy. Let your journey be guided by these principles, and you will find that even the most ordinary paths can lead to extraordinary destinations.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The paramount challenge I currently grapple with is the aftermath of a full knee replacement gone awry, an ordeal that introduced me to a world of unexpected hurdles and resilience. This medical journey began in August 2022 and quickly evolved into a complex saga marked by rare scar tissue complications, rendering me bedridden for an extensive six-month period. The inability to bear weight on my knee thrust me into a reality where mobility was a distant dream, and independence seemed like a lost artifact of the past.
During the subsequent months, my reliance on two walking sticks was a testament to my determination to reclaim my mobility, a transition that coincided with a life-altering diagnosis of autism. This period of intense physical and personal discovery was punctuated by a harrowing brush with mortality—a double pulmonary embolism that underscored the fragility of life and the tenacity of the human spirit. In those moments of stark vulnerability, the exceptional care provided by my GP in a quaint Scottish village and the dedicated NHS staff at Borders General Hospital was my lifeline, a beacon of hope in the tumultuous storm.
To navigate this challenge, I have embraced an unwavering commitment to physiotherapy, recognizing that it will be a lifelong companion. This journey of recovery is as much about relearning the art of walking each day as it is about understanding and adapting to the intricate ballet of body mechanics. My resolve is fortified by the breathtaking beauty of the Scottish Highlands, where each step taken amidst its majestic landscapes is both a triumph and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
Every day is now imbued with a sense of celebration and adventure, a precious gift of a second chance at life. My approach to overcoming this obstacle is rooted in gratitude, determination, and a deep-seated appreciation for the natural wonders that surround me. In facing this challenge head-on, I am not just learning to walk again; I am learning to live with a newfound depth of gratitude and strength.
In May 2022, a pivotal partnership was forged between BLISS and the University of Aberdeen’s School of Medicine, spearheaded by Dr. Heather Morgan, to embark on a journey of academically substantiating the BLISS methodology within the context of gratitude. This collaboration engaged post-graduate teams in the meticulous assembly of a research protocol, culminating in ethical approval by Autumn 2023. It was determined that the investigation would adopt a qualitative approach, focusing on a select control group through interviews and focus groups for an in-depth analysis. Concurrently, the development of a BLISS app was initiated by a dedicated team of six postgraduate students. This app, featuring 50 questions—10 for each of the themes: Body, Life, Identity, Society, and Stuff—aims to universally enhance wellbeing, offering free access globally. Additionally, the BLISS Busker Book of Q’s emerged as a direct offshoot of this study, offering a rich reservoir of engaging questions on a limited basis. Those interested in BLISS Busker Q’s can reach out via [email protected]. With a forthcoming website, this initiative promises a treasure trove of inquiries for lifelong exploration and well-being enhancement.
