Meet BKING

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to BKING. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

BKING, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity alive by simply just living my life and continuously experiencing new things. I find myself having writers block when I don’t get any new experiences to help shape and make a new perspective.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’ve always been a songwriter at heart. I grew up around music and always thought the coolest thing about church was the musicians on stage. This is where I picked up writing songs. I always had little made-up songs and tunes in my head, and anytime I was mad or sad, I would write it out and put it to music.
Music remained a huge part of my life in middle and high school band, and I started taking my artistry seriously around the age of 16 when I delved completely into songwriting. I was much more introverted in high school than when I was younger. I lacked confidence in myself, and because of that, I didn’t see being an artist as an option for me at the time.

I got ahold of 50 Cent’s audiobook: 50th Law at age 22, and it changed my life. Reading it made me see that the only person holding myself back was me.

In June of 2021, I worked up the courage to release my first single: “I’m Happy You Found You.” Since then, I’ve been on the lifelong journey of getting acquainted with myself.

I have put out a number of singles since then about relationships, self-reflection, manifestation, and more- including my recent single, Need You More, which is available on all streaming platforms.

I am focused on getting everything together for my debut EP- Thoughts After Midnight, which was born from coming to terms with where I am right now and putting it all to music.

My days have been filled with either writing, recording, learning production, or diving into the business side of music. While I am excited to put out the project, I also realize the music industry is very complicated, and I want to be knowledgable about the ins and outs of it, too.

I’m excited for people to hear this upcoming project, and I hope it’s a chance for everyone to get to know me more as I get to know myself.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Patience is definitely the first one. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Just keep going. You never know when it’s your time. You could end up giving up right before the breakthrough moment. Keep going.

The second skill is to be teachable. There’s always something you’ll have to learn in this industry. There’s always going to be criticism- don’t take it personally. Take what you need as a lesson and keep it moving.

Lastly, be open to networking. I still struggle with this myself- so I get it. It’s hard. You never know who you could be in the room with or have a casual conversation with that could help you long term. That person could also know someone who could help you. It doesn’t hurt just to put yourself out there.

To my fellow up-and-coming artists out there: Don’t be afraid to say what you want. It’s your craft and your vision. If the people you’re working with can’t see your vision, you might have to take it elsewhere. If you’re putting in the time, work, and talent, your vision is worth fighting for. Continue to be authentic. Be yourself. Be unique. B King.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
YES! With there being so many talented artists in Music City, I am always looking to collaborate. There are quite a few people I would love to work with. Starting with producers: A.B. Eastwood because he has worked with so many amazing local artists who I would also love to collaborate with. People like Tim Gent, Lo Naurel, and Bryant Taylorr. I also would love to work with another amazing producer SCi-FY – who is taking over with The Rap Girl (Daisha McBride) . I would love to work with her as well!
All of these musicians are great writers and just a beast with their pen! I love how many of them are working to bring back the 2000s R&B and real Hip Hop vibe-which the world is craving right now. It’s a vibe I work to bring to my music, and I would love to work together with fellow Nashville artists to change the scene.
