We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brana Dane. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brana below.
Hi Brana, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I still have imposter syndrome. As a model I get a lot of attention based mostly on my looks which are God-given. It’s difficult to overcome imposter syndrome completely because of all the adulation I receive on a daily basis. I’ve developed my skills in modeling and am confident in my professional abilities – but I feel a little bit of imposter syndrome is normal (and maybe even healthy). I’m extremely proud of who I am as a model but I’m equally proud of my mind and what I’ve contributed to the world through my advocacy in sustainability, my writing, my interactions and the daily choices I make. No matter how anyone else sees me, to me I’m simply Brana.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a professional model currently based in New York City. I grew up all over the globe, but spent the most years in Vancouver, CA. Prior to entering the world of fashion I was very studious, skipping grade 6; I had originally planned to attend medical school.
Since starting in fashion, I’ve garnered visibility through campaigns with brands such as Marshalls and through my social media accounts. However, my professional life has never followed a linear path.
In 2022, I posed for the cover of Glamour Bulgaria and was interviewed on the largest TV channel in Switzerland (SRF) as an expert in fashion on one of the channel’s most-watched documentaries. I have also been seen on TV going behind the scenes at NYFW, hosting for the Amazon Prime program, Fashion News Live on FNL Network.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with esteemed brands such as Maison Margiela, Samantha Sung, Milly, Herno, Sydnie Banks, Redken, Dennis Basso, Peter Thomas Roth and more. My fashion editorials have been featured in numerous magazines, including the cover story of Porter magazine (Porter Edit), Harper’s Bazaar, and Vogue. Look out for my next editorial in L’Officiel!
Advocacy for worker’s rights and sustainability are also important compliments to my career as a model. For example, I have worked with supermodel Cameron Russell on multiple political activism campaigns. In fact, for the 2019 NYC Earth Day Rally in Union Square I gave a keynote speech about sustainability. In 2020 I advocated for freelancers to be included in the CARES act. I was later asked to be a speaker for Fashinnovation’s Worldwide talks on the topic of sustainability.
I am represented by Genetics Model Management for fashion and Alter New Media for socials. In my spare time I write poetry, make art and edit articles for my lifestyle website, Model Perspective Magazine.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience is an important quality in any profession, but especially in creative fields. You have to set your own path and have faith that it will work out somehow. Secondly, the ability to integrate feedback is such an underrated skill and will serve you well not just professionally but in all areas of life. Lastly, you have to have fun with it and you have to love what you’re doing otherwise the rejection will be too hard and you won’t be able to continue.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always in search of other creatives to work with on fun projects. The sky is the limit! Editorials, videos and more.
As far as social collaborations, I love working with social-impact companies who have an eye for aesthetics. I’ve collaborated with major brands such as Prada and was the brand ambassador for Natural Nuance bags in 2021. Aside from products, I love introducing new and helpful lifestyle technologies to my audience.
