We recently connected with Brandon Jenkins and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
In both the realms of education and content creation, I’ve consistently found myself in the position of being the youngest and often the sole black male. Recognizing the scarcity of representation in these spaces, where black men comprise only about 2% in education, and where people of color might not always receive equitable visibility in content creation, I’ve navigated this landscape by embracing authenticity and taking calculated risks.
Despite encountering resistance to my ideas and perspectives, I remain steadfast in staying true to myself. This commitment to authenticity has set me apart, allowing me to stand out even when my suggestions are met with skepticism. Whether in proposing ideas in education or crafting content, my unwavering dedication to what resonates with me authentically has been pivotal.
My overarching goal in both education and content creation is to inspire and impact individuals on a profound level. I aim to build connections that transcend differences and enable others to discover their purpose. Though my unique perspective might not always be fully understood, my dedication to fostering meaningful connections and learning experiences remains at the core of my work.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Absolutely, I’m eager to share more about myself. Currently 25 years old, I serve as a fourth-grade teacher in Houston, Texas, while also delving into part-time content creation spanning fashion, lifestyle, and education. I find immense joy in merging these seemingly distinct worlds, challenging the notion that teaching and education can’t coexist with fashion.
My passion lies in helping fellow educators and individuals navigate professional spaces while staying true to their authentic style. It’s particularly meaningful for me to demonstrate that education can be both impactful and fashionable simultaneously. The most exhilarating aspect of my journey is the opportunity to connect with diverse individuals, learning from their perspectives as much as they learn from mine.
In my inaugural year of teaching, I’m not only navigating the intricacies of education but also discovering more about myself throughout this process. Concurrently, I’m pursuing a master’s in educational leadership, driven by a profound connection to improving the lives of all students.
Looking ahead, I’m thrilled about upcoming collaborations that I believe are integral to my personal and professional growth. These ventures excite me, and I anticipate they will bring value to my viewers as well. There’s a lot to look forward to, and I’m genuinely enthusiastic about the journey ahead.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, I believe three pivotal skills or areas of knowledge have significantly impacted my trajectory. First and foremost is the importance of staying true to oneself. While this advice is commonly heard, it can be challenging to fully grasp in a world heavily influenced by external factors. In a landscape of influencers, the temptation to emulate others is strong, but I encourage staying true and honest about one’s identity. It’s crucial to draw inspiration from others without compromising authenticity, choosing to be a leader rather than a follower.
The second key quality is adaptability and versatility. Life, especially in the realms of education and content creation, is unpredictable and often deviates from plans. Being prepared to navigate unforeseen challenges and swiftly adapting to evolving situations is paramount. Embracing the unpredictable nature of these spaces has been essential in my journey.
Lastly, a vital piece of advice is to infuse fun into every process. In the fast-paced world of 2024, where time seems to fly, finding joy in every moment is indispensable. Taking a lighthearted approach, not taking things too seriously, and savoring the journey contribute significantly to personal enjoyment and fulfillment. My recommendation to those early in their journey is to integrate these principles, as they have been instrumental in shaping my own path.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the past 12 months, my most significant area of growth and improvement has been overcoming the fear of taking risks or looking silly. Embracing the courage to step outside my comfort zone, unafraid of potential setbacks, has opened doors to new opportunities and enriched my personal and professional development. It’s a mindset shift that has propelled me forward and allowed me to navigate challenges with resilience and a newfound sense of confidence.
