We recently connected with Brandon Jordan and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by “taking the time to smell the roses.” What I mean by this reference is that I enjoy every moment in my life. My creativity may come from an artist’s music video, photos in a magazine, or simply watching a movie. I can have a spark of an idea during my daily routine, then I expand my vision from there.
My greatest ideas and concepts usually come to mind late at night. It may seem crazy to the average person, but other creatives I know share this same idea. It is really hard to turn my brain off at night to sleep when you are a creative person. But I use different applications on my phone to joint my ideas down for future use when an idea arises.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My company “Styled by Guru” offers an array of services including wardrobe styling, personal shopping, closet organization, and creative director for photoshoots. I have been in business for 8 years services primary the Middle Georgia and Atlanta, Georgia, areas. I have also expanded my business over the entire United States with virtual styling services for my clients as well.
The joy of being a wardrobe stylist is to ensure my clients look their best for life’s most important events and celebrations. When a person feels good and looks good, then they can conquer the world. A person’s appearance is the first thing people see, so I always ensure it’s a memorable experience for my clients.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that were most impactful in my journey are tenacity, dedication, and patience.
My tenacity has helped me over the years with my determination to grow my business and be successful. Everyone’s level of success may be different, but my business was built on offering superior customer service to my clients. I am entering into my busiest year for my company, and I thank God for every client and referral I have received.
My dedication to share my gifts and talents with the world with styling services has kept me in business over the years. I have had my ups and downs of the industry, but my dedication has never wavered. My level of enterprise is not for the weak hearted, but I push myself every day to overcome any obstacles that come my way.
My patience to work with clients that have never used styling services before is impeccable. I make sure my clients fully understand my process from start to finish. Once a service is booked, an in person or virtual consultation is scheduled to discuss services in full detail. I have excellent communication skills, so my clients can contact me via phone, text, or email during business hours for any assistance,
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The number one obstacle that my business is facing right now is COVID. COVID is still around and has impacted many areas of my business that affects how I provided services to my clients.
The fashion and retail industry have been impacted greatly by changing return and exchange policies, increased costs for shipping and returning items, availability of rental pieces from retailers and boutiques, and costs of supplies.
The availability of clothing items, shoes, and accessories have dramatically decreased over the last two years. I have had to pivot and adjust my business model and process to make sure I can still deliver amazing wardrobe items to my clients. I also only book services out a few months at a time to better control variables that are out of my control. Preparation is key so I make sure I always have a backup plan if an unexpected event comes up.
