Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brandy Yeack. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brandy, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
When I transitioned from a background as a nurses assistant in end-of-life care to optometry, I was driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Despite lacking experience in eye care, Dr. Hale recognized my potential and took me under his wing, providing me with comprehensive training and mentorship.
Balancing work and personal challenges, including overcoming domestic violence, being a single mom of three young children, and coping with the loss of my best friend and biggest supporter, my mom, to brain damage was undoubtedly difficult. However, my life took a transformative turn when I met my supportive husband and new employers—three men who played pivotal roles in rekindling my sense of hope and purpose. Their unwavering support, love, and encouragement empowered me to rise above my adversities, reigniting my determination to excel in my career and become a source of strength and inspiration for my children. As I advanced in my profession, my passion for helping patients deepened. I discovered a profound calling to share my empathy and compassion with others, making a meaningful impact in their lives.
Traveling for work can be a burden on my family, and it pulls me out of the office that I currently manage. It takes an employer who wants to invest in you as a professional. It also takes a husband who runs the household solo while being absent. I am lucky to have both. My employer, my amazing doctors, Dr Hale and Dr Young support me in everything I do. They mentor me and they guide me. I am truly honored to work them.
My best friend came to work for Valley Eye Care 2 months after I started. We started watching the doctors in the exam lanes and teaching ourselves how to scribe. We started collaborating with Dr Hale and we pioneered a tech-driven clinic that focused on improving patient outcomes. This journey led me to pursue certifications, undertake public speaking engagements, and eventually assuming the role of practice manager.
Through certifications, public speaking engagements, and assuming leadership roles within the practice, I discovered that my purpose extended beyond individual patient interactions. It became about elevating the entire optometric community, empowering professionals to deliver exceptional care and thrive in their practices.
Participation in programs like the Essilor Management Development Program not only honed my skills but also solidified my belief in the importance of effective leadership and mentorship within the industry. As I expanded my influence across Oregon and beyond, organizing statewide events and leading regional meetings, I realized that my purpose was to inspire others to discover their own passion and confidence.
Becoming a certified speaker allowed me to amplify my message, advocating for excellence within the industry and encouraging fellow professionals to embrace their unique paths. Looking ahead, I am committed to continuing my journey of discovery, leveraging my experiences to foster positive change and make a lasting impact in the optometric community.
In 2023, I received Oregon’s Optometric Assistant of the Year award, and to my surprise the American Optometric Association’s Paraoptometric of the Year award. Receiving these prestigious awards made me realize I truly was reaching others and impacting our industry in a positive way.
I currently sit on five optometric committees, and I am working on starting a Paraoptometric Association in the state of Oregon. This year will also launch Light up Oregon tour, while I have reached out to other facilitators on the west coast to turn it into Light up the West Coast with our amazing industry partner Transitions. I will continue to fuel our industry with passion and continue to make differences in people’s lives. I have found my purpose!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Since 2015, I’ve embarked on a journey as a dedicated paraoptometric at Valley Eye Care, initially without any prior experience. Over time, I assumed the role of clinic manager, leading a team of paras with passion and dedication. Together with Dr. Hale, I spearheaded the establishment of a thriving dry eye clinic and a tech-driven practice, enhancing patient care and satisfaction.
In 2018, I achieved certification as a CPO (Certified Paraoptometric) through the American Optometric Association, marking a significant milestone in my career. The following year, I was honored to share my insights and experiences on the main stage at the Vision Source Exchange, igniting a newfound passion for public speaking. In 2020, I elevated my expertise by obtaining CPOA (Certified Paraoptometric Assistant) certification and assumed the role of office manager, concurrently being appointed as a facilitator at Vision Source, entrusted with overseeing two regions.
As my responsibilities expanded, so did my commitment to advancing the field of optometry. I now oversee five regions across Oregon, orchestrating region meetings to teach best practices. Moreover, I’ve ventured into conducting learning labs on a national scale, recognizing education as the cornerstone of industry progress. My dedication and contributions were recognized in 2020 when I was honored with the Rising Star award by Vision Source.
The pinnacle of my achievements came in 2023 when I was named AOA Paraoptometric of the Year and Oregon Paraoptometric of the Year, affirming my dedication to excellence. Additionally, I was bestowed with the prestigious Vision Source Facilitator of the Year award, underscoring my commitment to advancing optometric practices.
Driven by a passion to uplift para-optometry, I’m collaborating with the Oregon Optometric Physicians Association to establish a dedicated section for paras, offering education, networking opportunities, and certification pathways. Through my involvement in various committees, both with the American Optometric Association and the Oregon Optometric Physicians Association, I strive to mentor others and propel our industry forward.
In essence, my journey exemplifies the belief that true fulfillment in our profession lies in giving our best, mentoring others, and collectively striving to push the boundaries of excellence in optometry.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Leadership and Management Skills: My ability to transition from a newcomer with no experience to a clinic manager demonstrates strong leadership and management skills. Leading a team of paraoptometrics, building successful clinics, and managing multiple regions reflect my capability to inspire and guide others towards achieving common goals.
2. Continuous Learning and Professional Development: My commitment to continuous learning and professional development is evident through my pursuit of certifications, participation in industry events, and engagement in educational initiatives. Obtaining certifications as a CPO and CPOA, speaking at conferences, conducting learning labs, and initiating educational programs highlight my dedication to staying abreast of the latest advancements in optometry.
3. Community Engagement and Advocacy: My involvement in various committees and associations, such as the American Optometric Association and the Oregon Optometric Physicians Association, underscores my commitment to community engagement and advocacy. Initiatives like establishing a para section within the association and promoting para-optometry reflect my dedication to advancing the profession and supporting fellow professionals in their career growth and development.
My advice for others in early stages of their journey is to
1. Seek opportunities for leadership roles, maybe take on a project that requires you to lead a team, delegate tasks, and manage resources successfully.
2. Invest in leadership training. I went to the Essilor Management Development Program and it put me on the road to success. It truly changed my whole career for success. Programs like this enhance your skills in communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution.
3. Accept feedback and constructive criticism. Find a mentor, and in turn mentor others.
4.Persue certifications, training courses, and workshops to expand your knowledge. Attend conferences, seminars, and webinars.
5. Join professional Associations and participate in their educational programs, networking events, and mentorship opportunities.
Remember that developing qualities and skills is a journey that requires dedication, perseverance, and willingness to step out of your comfort zone. Continuously seek opportunities for growth, be open to feedback, and never stop learning.
