Meet Breyon Johnson

We recently connected with Breyon Johnson and have shared our conversation below.

Breyon, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from the constant let downs from life and realizing that if I want to change my situation or I want to get to where I want to be I have to do it myself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a former foster kid, raised in a whirlwind of chaos in a small town. Yet, my little world was a magical place, brimming with creativity and big dreams!I had a wild ride on my journey, with plenty of bumps and potholes along the way. But, I buckled up and rode that rollercoaster with determination, and now I’m on my way to dreamland! I’m a storyteller, artist, and a creative assistant for the coolest non-profit around, Better Youth! As part of my work, I aim to highlight the dreams and aspirations of each young person. I do this by giving them a voice through social media. Instead of focusing solely on the non-profit organization, I prioritize the youth themselves. It’s important for those being helped to be heard, and from my own experience, I know how crucial it is to showcase the work that I do.

It’s super to be a driving force for others, cheering them on to reach their full potential, but don’t forget to show yourself some love too! I learned this the hard way. So, now I’m grabbing the reins of my own dreams, channeling my creative superpowers to work on a new comic series, take my social media game up a notch, and finally get back on track to become a storyboard artist.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
If I could hop in a time machine and whisper some wisdom to my younger self, I’d say:

1. Trust yourself, you’re a rockstar! Don’t let self-doubt dim your shine.
2. Stop waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Get out there and make your own opportunities, girl!
3. Don’t make your work about proving yourself to anyone. Your passion will fizzle out if you’re not enjoying the journey.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
This year, I learned two valuable lessons: self-love and self-discovery. Previously, I unconsciously harbored self-hatred and felt like a fraud. I believed that people didn’t like me and any compliments I received were insincere. This behavior was noticeable to others, prompting them to ask about my fluctuating confidence levels.

After a lot of self-reflection and guidance from mentors, I was able to understand and accept who I am. Now, when people say “Your energy reminds me of the sun parting through the clouds,” I know it’s because I’ve embraced my true self.
