We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brianna Chinkhwangwa . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brianna below.
Brianna , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I’ve learned to be effective by remaining true to myself. As the first black female sports reporter for The Ohio State University, I recognized that my approach to asking questions was unique. I encountered looks that seemed prejudiced or judgmental, but my passion for this role and my love for embracing new challenges fueled me. Being in a male-dominated field provided me with confidence to handle intense debates and stand my ground. It’s about knowing when to speak up and when to hold back.
I aimed to demonstrate that sports encompass more than just stats and play-by-plays; an athlete’s off-field actions also impact their journey. Being the sole representative in the room like me has taught me resilience and authenticity. By staying true to myself, I’ve navigated challenges effectively and contributed to shifting perceptions.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Originally from Fort Lauderdale, I spent 15 transformative years in Columbus, Ohio. During my time there, I achieved a significant milestone by creating and developing my own TV show, “Off the Fields,” which was produced at The Ohio State University.
My upbringing in Broward County, FL exposed me to a football culture that went beyond mere statistics. I was captivated by the immense personalities and talents that these athletes possessed off the field. I recognized a deep desire among fans to get to know these players as individuals, beyond their roles as athletes. From 2016 to 2020, I created and developed a groundbreaking TV show for the Ohio State Buckeyes football team, providing fans with an unprecedented look into the lives and stories of these remarkable athletes, showcasing their unique personalities and experiences beyond the gridiron.
Today, Off the Fields is a pioneering platform that serves as a secure haven for athletes to engage in candid discussions about pressing social issues and challenge mental health stigmas. This platform particularly focuses on the unique experiences of minority athletes. It also illuminates the issue of sexuality in sports, highlighting the significance of supporting women’s sports and reducing homophobia through both inclusivity promotion and the creation of safe, inclusive spaces that embrace intersectionality. We can learn valuable lessons from the inspiring journeys of athletes, including their experiences of both failure and success.
In an arena often dominated by male perspectives, “Off the Fields” embraces inclusivity wholeheartedly, aiming to reshape norms and break down barriers. The platform’s mission is to illuminate athletes’ passions beyond their respective fields, sharing stories of inspiration that ignite a sense of purpose within younger generations of athletes, encouraging them to embrace their authentic selves over conforming to societal pressures.
In addition to this, my journey is deeply rooted in the realm of sports journalism. I wear various hats as a sports reporter, news and media producer, editor, writer, and host. Through these roles, I dive into the heart of sports events, teams, and athletes, translating their energy and intricacies into captivating narratives for my audience. As a news producer, I ensure the latest stories are presented with precision and impact, using mediums like writing, videos, and hosting to create a diverse sports media experience.
Recently, I’ve taken on a transformative new venture. I am now working closely with little league and high school athletes in my community, dedicated to preparing them for the demands of media day. Given the growing influence of social media in the sports world, it’s essential to equip young athletes with the skills to confidently engage with media inquiries. I’ve identified that many young black athletes may face challenges when it comes to public speaking, and my objective is to empower them. My aim is for these athletes to recognize their inherent worth and communicate with confidence, fostering self-love and resilience. This skill extends beyond the field, aiding them in navigating various life experiences, including instances of bullying at school or on digital platforms.
What excites me most is the chance to contribute to the growth of these young athletes and amplify voices that are often overlooked. My work is about nurturing confidence, empowerment, and authenticity, both within the realm of sports journalism and in the lives of athletes as they traverse their careers and personal journeys. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to evolve and make a positive impact in the sports community and beyond.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey, three qualities that were most impactful include authenticity, adaptability, and empathy. Being true to myself allowed me to stand out and bring a unique perspective to my work. Adaptability was crucial in navigating a constantly changing media landscape and embracing new challenges. Empathy enabled me to connect deeply with athletes and understand their experiences beyond the field.
For those starting their journey, I recommend:
1. **Authenticity:** Embrace your uniqueness and perspective. Authenticity sets you apart and allows you to contribute something fresh to your field. Don’t be afraid to showcase your genuine self in your work.
2. **Adaptability:** Be open to learning and adapting to new technologies, trends, and challenges. The media landscape evolves rapidly, so staying adaptable ensures you remain relevant and effective.
3. **Empathy:** Understand the experiences and stories of the people you’re covering. Empathy allows you to connect on a deeper level and tell more meaningful stories. It’s not just about the sport; it’s about the people behind it.
Remember, success is a journey. It’s okay to make mistakes and learn from them. Surround yourself with mentors and peers who inspire you, and don’t hesitate to seek guidance when needed. Stay curious, keep honing your skills, and continue to find ways to make a positive impact through your work.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Absolutely, I am actively seeking to partner and collaborate with like-minded individuals and professionals who share a passion for our collective goals. Specifically, I am keen to collaborate with athletes who resonate with the mission and purpose of “Off the Fields.” I believe their experiences can add valuable perspectives to our discussions.
I am also looking to connect with mental health professionals, particularly psychotherapists in the realm of sports, and doctors who have an understanding of the impact of homophobia in sports. Together, we aim to address how this issue contributes to mental health challenges, including the recent concerning spike in African American suicides.
Moreover, I am interested in collaborating with minority doctors who comprehend the pressures of conforming to societal norms and the importance of selecting the right kind of therapy. By normalizing therapy within the sports community, we can encourage positive mental health practices.
If you’re reading this and are enthusiastic about collaborating, I invite you to connect with me through LinkedIn or via email. Let’s come together to make a meaningful impact, drive change, and contribute to a more inclusive and mentally healthy sports landscape. Your insights and expertise are invaluable to our shared mission.
