Meet Brittany Shane

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Shane. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Brittany, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose when I first started writing poetry in high school. In college I put those poems to music after I learned to play the guitar. My purpose is writing songs for others to hear and enjoy. I love just strumming the guitar now and listening and hearing the melody or words for my next song. It’s so much fun. I also love the recording process. It’s so magical to put everything together (the lyrics, music) and be in the room with other talented musicians. I start with just a sheet of paper with the lyrics and the guitar chords and leave the studio with a recording that is like a gift for others to hear and share.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I write songs for others to enjoy. Just recently, I finished my new song “Big Deal”. I’m really excited to put it other there for others to hear. You never know how others will respond to it. You just have to let go. I’ve been singing “Big Deal” at my shows and it has been getting a lot of claps at the end, so I’m thinking it will do well! It’s really exciting to put a song out there and just see what happens.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I’m so glad I learned to play guitar. My aunt Terri Nelles played guitar when I was growing up. She really inspired me to pick up the guitar and start to learn songs. We would send each other songs and charts back and forth in the mail. It was so exciting to be excited about learning music with someone. I later would go on to record my first 2 albums with Terri and her husband John in their basement studio.

My advice for folks who are early in their songwriting or guitar playing journey would be to find a friend you can enjoy playing music with and sharing your song ideas. My friend/aunt Terri helped give me that little push I needed to reach further …To writing an album of songs and to eventually record them. I don’t know what I would do without that support. It was also so much fun!

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m currently working on two things. I have a side project with The Hazy Shades (a tribute to The Bangles). We’re singing all The Bangles hits and also other songs by The Go-Go’s and other 80’s songs.

I’d love to collaborate with an electronic musician in the near future. That’s a goal. I’ve been keeping an eye out, reading ads, etc. in Austin for opportunities to work on electronic music. It would be great to have that dream come true this year.
