We were lucky to catch up with Brittney Burchett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brittney, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
My self discipline comes from many years of honing my craft and understanding everything that goes into leading a band (booking gigs, promoting, keeping a good reputation, practicing, etc). I’ve always wanted to be my own boss, so I had to accept the responsibilities that come along with that freedom. It’s been very difficult and some times I wish someone else would take over but it has also taught me a lot about professionalism and connecting with people.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a professional singer in 3 cover bands currently and one acoustic duo (I’m also in a side project focused on recording original music). I am the band leader/front woman in “Cinnamon Whiskey” and “Brittney and the Bsides,” and I am one of 4 lead singers in the “Vinyl Gypsies.” I play 2-4 times a week all over Ventura County and sometimes Santa Barbara. I started out as a solo artist, writing my own music and playing guitar at the age of 16. I ended up moving from Ventura to Sacramento in 2009 where I was able to tour with the band “Guttermouth” as their opening act (with my punk band) for a few shows as well as running my own punk venue (Casa de Chaos) out of a basement in downtown Sacramento. I booked shows, traveled, played with some well-known bands all over the bay area and Northern California. I did that for a few years before moving back to Ventura in 2012. My life is a little less exciting now, but I occasionally get booked at a festival or an awesome venue I’ve never been to. I do this as a full time job and it takes so much time and work that I don’t get paid for, but at the end of the day, I’m doing what I love for a living and it’s worth it. It’s been a hard road and trying to keep the peace between bandmates/and learning time management has been a challenge, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Follow me on Instagram @brittneythemermaid for my latest updates, also to see when my album comes out that I just recorded with some awesome people in Austin, TX.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities you need to obtain to become a professional singer are: thick skin (you can’t let people get in your head about your talent), self-motivation (nobody is going to do your job for you), and the ability to always know there is always room for improvement (practice as much as you can and challenge yourself).
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed I make a list of everything I need to do and give myself a doable timeframe to compete the tasks in.
