Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brooklyn Kelly. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brooklyn, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being the only one in the room that looks like me has turned into my greatest asset. When I was younger and growing up in a predominantly white area, I was one of very few Black and Filipino people in my institutions. Although alienated, I realized people naturally gravitated towards me for my energy, mindset, and character. I quickly learned what a beautiful experience it is to be radically different intrinsically. Recognizing that I am unique and I have something only I can offer, it instilled a sense of confidence . That confidence has then transcended into spaces where a majority of the people look just like me. Even in spaces where people look similarly to me, I remember the key fact that I am original and I am the only version of me. It sound cliche but it’s the greatest strength and realization.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a singer/songwriter based in Los Angeles, CA. I started my artistic journey in the theater growing up and my passion for acting, singing, and dancing began. I spent many of my earlier years dedicated to my hip hop techniques and acting techniques, but at my current state of my life-the music is my main focus. I love creating music that can help heal and transcend our mindsets. As a spiritual person, I integrate sound bowls and specific sound frequencies to help raise my listener’s vibrations. When I write my music, I mostly have myself in mind while I explore themes of love, empowerment, and self-discovery. I am currently releasing a stream of music that I’m very excited about!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey were discipline, adaptability, and rest. I found that once I got an idea or inspiration, I would write down the idea then start to track the goal backwards. Then I would outline what each step is to attain the goal. After outlining the process, I was able to hold my myself accountable since I am able to see every detail of my step. Alongside staying discipline with a plan, I’ve learned that there also needs to be space for adaptability. I’ve found that once I stayed so focused on how something was supposed to play out, it was really hard to be open to other ways the manifestation would come. Staying focused is great but not if you can’t be open to the expansive ways your goals can come to fruition. Some circumstances require adaptation. Lastly, rest is a key component in my journey. Rest has helped me allow. It is great to be someone who hustles but I understand that some of the greatest accomplishments have come to me when I was in a period of rest.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am constantly looking for new artists to collaborate with! I am looking for people who are inspired by R&B, pop, edm, and house influences. I want to work with people who are comfortable in themselves and are open to creating something innovative!
