Meet Bryan Talbot

We were lucky to catch up with Bryan Talbot recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Bryan, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
It is a calculated effort to maintain a positive mindset and take a look at the bigger picture even when facing difficulties. Challenges can be opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable obstacles although we may not see it that way in the moment. This mindset helps me persist and continue striving for goals, even when faced with setbacks. My OCD doesn’t hurt either 🙂 I’m very detail-oriented so this takes consistent effort on my part. In general resilient people tend to have clear goals and a sense of purpose. These goals provide motivation and direction, making it easier to persevere through tough times. Having a strong sense of purpose can help individuals stay focused on the bigger picture.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
“For over 30 years, I have served as a Wing Chun Kung Fu (Martial Arts) Instructor. This business is notably challenging, requiring one to continuously adapt to remain successful and stay relevant as trends evolve. However, the most gratifying aspect of teaching lies in the positive impact on individuals. Martial arts practice acts as a great equalizer, contributing to a more harmonious society. Through my extensive experience, I’ve witnessed how it can guide those inclined toward conflict and fighting to discover inner tranquility and peace. Consequently, this transformation reduces, if not eliminates, their inclination to engage in violent or negative behavior.

Conversely, there are individuals on the opposite end of the spectrum, characterized by fear and a lack of self-confidence, who harbor concerns about confrontation, attacks, and fighting. Over time, through martial arts training, they gradually build self-confidence and self-respect, ultimately conquering their apprehensions regarding conflict or the prospect of a violent encounter. Assisting these individuals in overcoming their fears and insecurities is indeed a rewarding endeavor.” I feel it helps me leave behind a better place for us all to live in.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
“This is a truly intriguing question. Firstly, I came to the realization that everything I engage in involves energy. The energy I either draw upon or channel is inherently artistic in nature. Secondly, the way I manifest this energy plays a fundamental role in shaping my identity over time. Thirdly, it’s important to acknowledge that this energy doesn’t persist without ongoing, diligent practice and effort. The key is to recognize the innate energy within yourself, harness it, and remain committed to putting in the work needed to sustain its continuous flow.”

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
“For me, the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences often come from collaboration and collective efforts with like-minded individuals. A perfect illustration of this is music. Plucking a single string on a guitar produces a beautiful, individual sound as it vibrates. Yet, when multiple strings are strummed together in harmony, the result, provided all the strings are in tune, is a symphony of sound. This harmonious action exemplifies the idea that the collective power of many is greater than that of one. This concept resonates with me deeply. If there are those who share a desire to create a greater power through harmonious actions, whether in the realm of music, art, or martial arts, I wholeheartedly welcome your inquiry.”
