We were lucky to catch up with Caitlynn Weeden recently and have shared our conversation below.
Caitlynn, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I think this is always something that I am working on! I think confidence and self-esteem are at different levels in every aspect of your life. I might feel super confident in a relationship or a certain skill but might feel super insecure about a certain skill. I’ve learned that when I am feeling insecure or uncertain about something it usually just means I am new to it. I think in relation to photography I have become confident through the sheer amount of work that I have done with it! I know that I am always willing to try something new or get creative. I think for awhile I wouldn’t call my self a photographer but then I realzied that I have been paid to do this job! I do it all the time and its literally just a title. You can call yourself whatever you want! So I guess you could say my confidence comes from constant practice and believing in myself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an adventure photographer that is based in Seattle, Wa. I currently work a 9-5 where I am a mechanical engineer for an aerospace company. Photography is my true passion and such a fun creative outlet for me. I really enjoy creating colorful, authentic photos that tell a story and inspire others to get outside. Along with photography I do content creation for brands. I think what is really cool about my niche is that it is all adventures that I already enjoy and plan to go on. I am so lucky to get to document this wild life that I live.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the three things that were helpful for me in developing my photography journey was getting curious, creating community and putting myself out there. I am always wondering and asking how can I get better with my craft. I love to watch you tube videos and listen to photography seminars from other artists. I think this leads into creating a community. I feel like I’ve been really lucky lately to meet a lot of really cool creators. Meeting others who I can bounce ideas on, ask industry questions to and just connect with has been a game changer for me! Reaching out to others and making more friends in the industry was me putting myself out there. One of my favorite podcast hosts talked about how you need to stop putting other creators on a pedestal, like they are a celebrity and know so much more than you! I think I did this for awhile and was discounting my own knowledge and ability to learn. As soon as I accepted that I was just like those creators I felt like I fit in more and accepted that I belong in those spaces too! I also think that when you put yourself out there more opportunities come to you. For example I went to a cabin weekend with a group of girls I had only met on Instagram and then a few months later I went to Alaska with one of the girls. Now we are creating group events together. Her name is @explorenborgen on Instagram, you should definitely go check her out! I guess if I could give myself advice at the start of my journey it would be to lean in to the learning and the uncomfortable feeling of what you really want!
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My Ideal client is a brand that helps others get outdoors! Whether that is a hotel or a sneaker I love working with brands to showcase their projects and help tell a story. I also enjoy working with local business to help them create content or work on their own personal branding photos. To get super specific I love working with women owned business. Empowering women to succeed is so important to me. I think as a photographer one of my favorite things is to capture something that someone worked so hard to create for them to show it off. I am learning more as I work with clients and brands that I love to work with people who have clear communication styles. When I am creating content or photos it is so important that both parties agree on what the end result should be. I have been learning lately more about story boarding and making creative briefs so that both parties can have input!
