Meet Calvary Sampson

We were lucky to catch up with Calvary Sampson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Calvary , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Reflecting on my journey, resilience has been a constant companion, shaping me through pivotal moments. Hurricane Katrina’s impact on my hometown of New Orleans marked a significant chapter. Evacuating at a young age was a profound experience, and my spirituality played a crucial role. In the midst of chaos, it provided solace, reminding me that I wasn’t navigating the challenges alone. Transitioning into college as a first-generation student brought new hurdles, emotionally and academically. My connection with God became a guiding force, a whisper of assurance during moments of uncertainty. These experiences, etched with the echoes of hurricanes and academic pursuits, have woven a narrative of profound resilience within me. It’s not just about bouncing back; it’s about growth. In the formal dance of life’s challenges, my spirituality stands as a steady partner, emphasizing the enduring presence that guides and strengthens my journey. It’s a testament to the strength derived from acknowledging the divine thread woven into the fabric of my life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
At Calvary De’Rosa Counseling and Consulting, we’re not just therapists; we’re partners in helping you navigate life’s twists and turns while fostering improved mental health and overall well-being. I’m Calvary De’Rosa Sampson, LPC, NCC, the proud owner and a passionate Teen and Adult Therapist. Being a National Certified Counselor and Licensed Professional Counselor in both Louisiana and Texas, I bring a blend of professionalism and genuine warmth to our services. One aspect that’s particularly exciting and close to my heart is our specialization in supporting college students. Navigating the challenges of college life is a unique journey, and we’re here to provide tailored support for students facing academic, personal, and transitional hurdles. Our focus this year extends to building a stronger community through support groups and workshops, making mental health support accessible and empowering for everyone.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Reflecting on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge stand out as profoundly impactful. First and foremost, resilience has been a cornerstone. Life is full of unexpected challenges, and the ability to bounce back, learn from experiences, and adapt has been crucial. Second, cultivating effective communication skills has played a pivotal role. Whether expressing myself in professional settings or connecting with clients on a personal level, clear and empathetic communication has been key. Lastly, continuous learning and staying open to new knowledge have been instrumental. The field of mental health is dynamic, and staying informed allows me to provide the best possible support.

For those early in their journey, my advice is to embrace challenges with resilience. Understand that setbacks are not failures but opportunities for growth. Invest time in honing communication skills – listen actively, express yourself clearly, and build meaningful connections. Lastly, adopt a mindset of continuous learning. Stay curious, seek out new knowledge, and be adaptable in the face of change. Remember, every step in the journey is a chance to learn and evolve both personally and professionally.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

Over the past 12 months, my most substantial area of growth has centered around the challenges of being a full-time entrepreneur and business owner. This journey has been a masterclass in creativity and strategic thinking, pushing me to expand my horizons and think big. It’s not just about managing a business; it’s about envisioning its broader scope and potential impact. Alongside this, I’ve gained a profound understanding of the delicate dance between work and play. Recognizing the necessity of both, I’ve learned that sustainable productivity is rooted in a harmonious blend of focused effort and rejuvenating downtime.

I’m realizing that life isn’t about attaining a perfect balance but rather about setting clear priorities and embracing mindfulness has been a game-changer. Learning to discern what truly matters has allowed me to navigate the dynamic demands of entrepreneurship with intention. The delicate dance between work and play has become a vital aspect of my routine, acknowledging the importance of both in maintaining overall well-being.
